Alt Refrath is a district of Bergisch Gladbach and belongs to the statistical district 6 of the city under No. 62.

history

Alt Refrath is the oldest settlement center in the area around Refrath . The first clearing activity in the Refrath area probably began in the 9th century. The first crystallization points of the Franconian conquest were the areas around the early medieval Refrath Church, the Herrenhof Kippekausen and probably also the Saaler Mühle.

The Old Catholic Parish Church

The old Catholic parish church Refrath (popularly: baptismal church ), initially built in the 9th century as a wooden half-timbered church, no longer met the spatial requirements in the following century, as the young community increased in number due to ongoing clearing activities. In order to meet these requirements, one built in 10/11. Century a stone building on the site of the old wooden church. After this building burned down around 1050, a new stone building was built around 1200, and a tower was added in the 13th century. This third church building was extended with a sacristy in 1765/66 and has been preserved to the present day. Church life shifted to the newly built church of St. Johann Baptist in the second half of the 19th century, because the medieval building no longer met the spatial requirements.

The church is entered under no. 32 in the list of architectural monuments in Bergisch Gladbach .

Steinbreche House

The Steinbreche house was built in 1712 by the master stonemason Leonard Goudhaire . It got its name from the nearby quarry from which stones were quarried for the new Bensberg Castle . The house is entered under No. 38 in the list of architectural monuments in Bergisch Gladbach . By 1902 restoration rooms, a wine bar, a large dance hall and the covered terrace were built.
