history

The name Gronau is said to have its origin in the word Groenauwe, which means green meadow. Around 1845 it is said to have been in the Rhine valley as a friendly meadow valley, traversed by the Strunde. Today the formerly green floodplains can hardly be found. Industrial and residential settlements have arisen in their place. Agriculture has largely given way. The Strunde, which repeatedly carried floods and made the adjacent meadows fertile, has now been tamed and flows in a narrow bed. Even storms of the century have hardly been able to cause major damage since the construction of the edge canal .

Mining

Mining was probably already practiced in the area around Gronau in the Latène period . In many places certain traces point to medieval mining. From the middle of the 19th century, there was a rush for the extraction of iron ore and non-ferrous metals . The following mines were temporarily in operation: pit Habsburg , pit Heidkamp III , pit Hohenzollern , pit Maiblume , pit Margaretha Josepha and pit Pauline hut .

Mills on the round

Of the numerous mills on the Strunde that used its water power, there were a total of six mills in Gronau, namely the Kieppemühle , the Dünnmühle , the Piddelbornsmühle , the Kradepohlsmühle , the Schlodderdicher Mühle and the Gierather Mühle .

population

According to the population register, on June 30, 2017, Gronau had 6,266 inhabitants (1,294 of whom were foreigners). It is one of the most populous districts of Bergisch Gladbach . The age group over 65 with 1,238 inhabitants (including 176 foreigners) was stronger than the age group under 18 years with only 1,082 (including 185 foreigners).

With the exception of the Gronau residential park built in the 1970s, the residential area consists of single and small to medium-sized apartment buildings.

Infrastructure

Gronau has a good infrastructure. It is about three kilometers to the A 4 in Lustheide, the A 3 can be reached in Cologne-Holweide after exactly 4.5 kilometers, and the access to the A 1 in Burscheid ( Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis ) is via Altenberg (Bergisches Land ) after about 12 kilometers. The Cologne / Bonn Airport is 15 kilometers away. You can reach the main train station in Cologne in a quarter of an hour with the S-Bahn and there are good bus connections to the center of Bergisch Gladbach. Short distances lead to various department stores. Several schools are easily accessible from here, as are a large number of different sports facilities. The recreational value is also high: the Refrath golf course is located in the southern part of Gronau. In the nearby Thielenbruch and in the Schluchter Heide ( nature reserve Gierather Wald ) you can go hiking, jogging and cycling.
