The Schluchter Heide is part of the Bergische Heide terrace . This is a large, predominantly forested area between Cologne-Dellbrück and the Bergisch Gladbach districts of Gronau and Refrath . The remains of the Franconian Forest and the Strunde-Aue in the Kradepohlsmühle nature reserve and the grassland complex In der Hardt on the Cologne side are also included in this area.

A partial area of ​​189 ha is designated as the Gierath Forest nature reserve.
