The Gierather Wald nature reserve extends in the Bergisch Gladbach urban area between Gierath and Brandroster in the west, Schlodderdich in the north, the golf course in the east, and Sandbüchel and Saaler Mühle in the south. It is part of the Schluchter Heide and the Bergische Heideterrasse .
The designation of the protected area serves to preserve and develop the deciduous forest area typical of the natural area, which is traversed by near-natural brooks and has larger peat-moss-rich wet areas as well as birch and alder swamps.
Mining
In the mid-19th century the forest was in mining in Gierather open pit on iron operated. These were the mines Grube Emma , Grube Franconia , Grube Habsburg and the Hohenzollern mine . You can still see the pings in the middle of the forest from the Habsburg mine .
