The nature reserve Grube Weiß extends in the Moitzfeld district of Bergisch Gladbach between the TechnologiePark Bergisch Gladbach and Meisheide in the west, as well as the districts Grube Weiß in the north, Steinacker in the east and Obereschbach in the south. The area lies entirely on the old spoil heaps from the shafts and the flotation system of the Weiß pit, as well as the former garbage dump of the then still independent town of Bensberg . The nature reserve is completely fenced.
history
After the Weiß pit stopped underground mining in 1930, the dump of the main shaft near Steinacker remained unchanged to this day. It was different with the gravel heaps from the processing plant , which had been deposited in the direction of Obereschbach. From now on, they were taken to flotation on a light railroad and enforced there again because they still contained residual ore in economically favorable quantities. The waste products in the form of fine sand were deposited on large heaps over two stages in the direction of Obereschbach. After the Second World War , the piles of the Washington , Blücher and Berzelius mines were processed in the same way. This operation was discontinued on December 1, 1957. Almost all buildings were razed to the ground.
From 1962 to 1972 the former town of Bensberg operated a dump for household waste and construction rubble on the lower flotation dump, which at the end almost reached the road from Bensberg to Untereschbach (L 136). The landfill gas produced here has been extracted and recycled by Interatom GmbH since 1981 .
Nature trail
In 2001 the site was proposed to be an area of Community importance (SCI) . This led to the fencing of the entire area. In this context, it was backfilled with excavated earth as part of recultivation. What remained was an upper and a lower terrace, each with a large settlement pond. The terrain is also structured by tree and shrub zones, wet and dry lawns, as well as gravelly areas without vegetation and steep slopes without vegetation.
Goats have been kept here since 2002, the task of which is to stop the bush and forest cover in the area and to ensure that the forest-free areas are expanded. This is necessary because the specially protected yellow-bellied toads and many other rare animal and plant species living in the Weißes mine need sunny, warm habitats. The nature trail was officially inaugurated on October 5th, 2003.
FFH area
Since 2004, the former dump site of the White mine has been declared a Natura 2000 area according to Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive) with the area number DE-5009-301 under the name Tongrube Weiß . The special protection applies above all to the yellow-bellied toad , the sand lizard and the midwife toad . In addition, will also come toads , water frogs , salamanders , mountain and newts before. In order to stabilize their population, it is necessary to maintain and promote the existing land and spawning habitats through a coordinated care concept.
Nature reserve
The State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection in North Rhine-Westphalia recognized the area as a nature reserve in 2005 . The funding objectives coincide with those of the Habitats Directive.
In particular, the following protective purposes are pursued:
- Preservation and development of the abandoned mine as a valuable secondary habitat for numerous animal and plant species, some of which are threatened,
- Conservation and development of biogeographically significant species as well as amphibian and reptile species that rely on secondary habitats and relatively undisturbed areas,
- Preservation of the varied mosaic of different, closely interlinked biotopes, such as successional forest, bushes, bodies of water and fallow land in various stages and the communities that occur there.
In addition to the occurrence in the neighboring Tongrube Oberauel nature reserve , the White Pit is the only currently known habitat of yellow-bellied toads in the Bergisches Land.
