Since 2008, the NSG has been shown on the landscape plan of the southern district of the Rheinisch-Bergisch district.

location

In terms of nature , the area belongs to the transition between the Bergische plateaus ( Süderbergland ) and the Bergische Heideterrasse ( Niederrheinische Bucht ). The Cox pit is located on the western edge of the Hardt forest area , about half of which is in the two districts of Gladbach and Bensberg-Freiheit . In the north is the district of Heidkamp , in the south the district of Lückerath .

Area description

In the quarry, dolomite was mined from 1969 to 1985 ; after that the pit was originally to be backfilled. Due to the biodiversity, however, it was left open and placed under nature protection.

The area is divided into small areas, there are many different types of biotope in a small space next to each other. Mention should be made here of four larger still waters (former excavation waters ), rock faces, vegetation-free rubble heaps as well as surrounding forest areas that offer a habitat for various plant and animal species. Special animal and plant species found in the nature reserve are, among other things, grass snake , sand lizard , Kingfisher , bats (several species) and Andrena ( Andrena TYPES) and Genuine centaury , finial and crab claw .

tourism

There are several paths through the area with viewpoints with information boards. In all nature reserves in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis, including the Cox pit, there is a strict route requirement .
