North Rhine-Westphalia biotope register
The North Rhine-Westphalia Biotope Register, or BK NRW for short , is a project of the LANUV NRW to record protected and worthy of protection biotopes and their factual data. It has existed since 1978.
In the database, the five district governments and the 54 districts and independent cities in North Rhine-Westphalia can find out where protected biotopes are located in their district. The legal basis for recording is Section 42 (2) of the State Nature Conservation Act of North Rhine-Westphalia. The types are defined in particular in Section 30 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act and Section 42 of the State Nature Conservation Act of North Rhine-Westphalia.
At the beginning of 2014 there were in North Rhine-Westphalia:
- 3,151 nature reserves ,
- 1 national park ,
- 518 areas under the European protection status of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive (FFH areas),
- 28 bird sanctuaries with European protection status,
- 29,234 worthy of protection and 33,471 protected biotopes as mapped habitats for rare animal and plant species as well
