The nature reserve Tongrube Oberauel is a former clay pit with an area of ​​23.66 hectares. The nature reserve with the key number GL-048 is located in the Untereschbach district of Overath with the transition to the Moitzfeld district of Bergisch Gladbach .

Until the early 1960s , clay and greywacke were mined on the south side of the Aueler Berg, which rises 199 m above the Sülztal . The brick factory located in the Sülztal had its own siding to the Sülztalbahn .

FFH area

An approx. 9 hectare area of ​​the NSG forms the FFH area according to the FFH directive under the name Tongrube / Steinbruch Oberauel and the number DE-5009-302 . Target species in the FFH area are the yellow-bellied toad and the midwife toad . Together with the Grube Weiß nature reserve , it forms an important refuge for amphibians . The only known occurrence of the yellow-bellied toad in the Bergisches Land is currently in the two former pits .
