The Volbachtal nature reserve extends into the Herkenrath and Moitzfeld districts of Bergisch Gladbach and the Immekeppel district of Overath . On its way out of the headwaters in the upper Volbachtal, the brook runs through the areas of Volbach , Volbacher Mühle , Grube Berzelius , Wulfshof , Grube Apfel , Juck and Külheimer Mühle .
vegetation
The upper Volbach is fed by several near-natural source streams that run in deeply incised sifts with older beech forest stands . The Bachaue, which is wider in the south in the area of the Volbacher Mühle and at Juck in the so-called Freudental, is equipped with a rich biotope complex . It consists of wet and wet meadows with tall herbaceous meadows , pastures and alder forests . There are endangered and rare orchid species here . In the entire Volbachtal there are various spring outlets , small bodies of water, ponds and several pond bodies that provide an important habitat for amphibians and many insect species .
The protection designation was made to maintain and develop the long and relatively undisturbed stream valley system with small alluvial forests and extensive wet and humid grassland areas.
Mining
At the beginning of the 19th century it became technically possible to turn zinc ore into high-quality metal. As a result, a veritable zinc rush developed in the entire Bensberg ore district in the middle of the 19th century. A larger surface trenches of the old mining industry in the northern part of a mining concession of the mine apple was for the prospectors of finger pointing on an ore deposit . In the period that followed, the entire Volbachtal was covered with mining. In addition to the apple mine, the Georg Forster mine and the Berzelius mine should also be mentioned, which have left their marks here on a large scale.
