The Katzbachaue nature reserve encompasses the course of the Katzbach from its source region east of Heiligenhaus to the crossing under Bensberger Strasse east of Ferrenberg in the town of Overath in the Rheinisch-Bergisch district .

The Katzbachtal has several natural spring areas , which are mostly forested. In the part that runs along highway 136, one can find near-natural riparian forests and structured forest edges with bushes . Located in the western waters accompanying source region Hochstauden- and damp corridors and a dependent species richer rough pasture . The further, naturally meandering course of the water is accompanied by some steep sections. As far as the river bed rich spruce and poplar stocks zoom.
Protective purposes
The protected area designation is for the preservation and development of the Bachtal with near-natural alluvial forests and structurally rich bushes in the transition to grassland areas, for the preservation of spring and tall herbaceous meadows and a natural course of water in sections. The following protective purposes are defined in detail:
- Preservation and development of the extensive, scenically particularly beautiful and diverse stream valley system with particular suitability for recreation in nature,
- Securing the function as a biotope network area of particular, sometimes outstanding importance,
- Preservation and development of the natural source areas, a natural and meandering brook course.
