Untereschbach is a district of Overath in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis in the south of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Untereschbach is located in the Sülztal in the west of the Overath urban area, at the mouth of the Eschbach . It borders in the north on the city of Bergisch Gladbach , in the northeast on the districts of Immekeppel and in the southeast on Steinenbrück and in the west on the city of Rösrath .

With the Untereschbach junction, Unterschbach is connected to the A 4 Cologne - Olpe motorway; the B 55 runs on the same route as the motorway.

history

The settlement was built at the intersection of the old Brüderstraße ( aelde Broederstraiß , today Olper Straße and former B 55) with Heidenstraße , which ran along the Sülztal in the direction of Immekeppel. The Brüderstraße was first mentioned in 1386. Presumably there was already a settlement at the intersection at that time. The Eschbacher Mühle has existed since at least 1413. Because of the mill, the place was also called Mühleneschbach .

Until the line was closed in 1966, Untereschbach had a train station on the Cologne – Lindlar railway line (popularly: Sülztalbahn), which was located at the height of today's bridge pillar of the motorway.

Before 1975 the place belonged to the city of Bensberg . In the course of the municipal reorganization , the place became part of the city (then municipality) of Overath on January 1, 1975 in accordance with § 10 Cologne Act .

Mining

Already in the High Middle Ages, lead was mined in the entire area around Untereschbach for the construction of the Cologne Cathedral and the Altenberg Cathedral . Mining has been securitized for the Lüderich mine since the mid-19th century . The AG des Altenbergs had its headquarters here since 1897. Other ore mines were the Grünewald mine and the Napoleon mine .

Dam breach in the Weiß pit

To the north-east of Obereschbach , the site of the Weiß mine extends with several clarification ponds that extend to the south-west as far as the road that leads to Untereschbach. On the night of August 15-16, 1932, the dam of the lower clarification pond broke. The building yard of the city of Bergisch Gladbach is located here today. A devastating catastrophe made its way through the Eschbachtal at midnight. A terrible rumble "like thunder" accompanied the mud masses on their way down the valley. Buildings were damaged or destroyed. Cows, pigs, chickens and other domestic animals suffocated in the flood of mud. Valuable arable and meadow land was made unusable for decades, so that the dire consequences are still visible today.

traffic

Until the closure in 1966, Untereschbach had a train station on the Cologne – Lindlar line . At that time the railway was popularly known as the Sülztalbahn or et Lindlarer Jrietchen , and the railway mail drivers spoke of the Immekeppel – New York route .

Hiking trails

In addition to some other hiking trails, the Way of St. James leads to Santiago de Compostela coming from Marburg with the next stage destination Cologne through Untereschbach. In the other direction, the Elisabethpfad leads, a pilgrimage route coming from Cologne towards Marburg.
