history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1470. Klef and its forms Kleff , Klief , Klev , Clef , Clev are comparatively common place names in the region and derive from the Latin Clivus = hill , steeply sloping mountain slope , slope , embankment .

The Topographia Ducatus Montani by Erich Philipp Ploennies , Blatt Amt Steinbach , shows that the living space had a courtyard as early as 1715, which is labeled as Clef . The place is marked there with the symbol of a Freihof . Carl Friedrich von Wiebeking names the court on his charter of the Duchy of Berg in 1789 as Klef . From it it emerges that the place was part of the Honschaft Balken in the parish of Overath at that time .

The place is recorded on the topographical survey of the Rhineland from 1817 as Klev . The Prussian first recording from 1845 shows the residential area under the name Clef . From the Prussian new admission of 1892, the place is alternately recorded on measuring table sheets as Clef or Klef .

In 1822, 19 people lived in the place categorized as a courtyard , which after the collapse of the Napoleonic administration and its replacement, belonged to the Overath mayor's office in the Mülheim am Rhein district and was then called Kleverhof . For the year 1830 20 inhabitants are given for the place designated as leased property. The place categorized as a courtyard according to the overview of the government district of Cologne in 1845 had seven residential buildings with 60 inhabitants under the name of Kleve , all of them Catholic denominations. The municipality and estate district statistics of the Rhine province lists Klef under the name Clef 1871 with nine houses and 59 inhabitants. In the municipality lexicon for the Rhineland province of 1888, eleven houses with 67 inhabitants are given for Klef. In 1895 the place had twelve houses with 60 inhabitants, in 1905 13 houses and 52 inhabitants are given.
