Heinrich Dittmaier

Heinrich Dittmaier (born October 22, 1907 in Cologne , † October 29, 1970 in Bonn ) was a German name researcher and dialectologist .

Life

Dittmaier attended primary school in Brussels from 1913 to 1918 , then in Cologne and Bad Godesberg until 1920 . In 1929 he passed his Abitur at the Humanist Gymnasium in Aschaffenburg and in the same year began studying German, history and folklore at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn and received his doctorate in June 1940 on “The apa problem, investigations of a western European river name type ". From 1936 to 1940 he was employed as an employee at the Rhenish field name archive in the Institute for Historical Regional Studies of the Rhineland . Even during his studies, Dittmaier took part in the collection of the dialectic vocabulary of the Rhineland. He also collected Rhenish field names, which he later published in his field name book. In 1944 he married Maria Brockmans from Mettmann . In 1947 the daughter Edelgard was born. From 1946 he was given the task of editing the " Rhenish Dictionary ", which he continued as the successor to Josef Müller until the publication of the last three volumes VII to IX in 1964.
