The Niederrhein e. V. (VN) is a Krefeld- based association for home care , hiking and nature and environmental protection in the Lower Rhine region .

The association registered in the register of associations of the Krefeld District Court (VR 1368) was founded on March 23, 1928 under the name Verein linker Niederrhein . In 1998 the name was shortened to Verein Niederrhein (VN) because of the local associations on the right bank of the Rhine . Members are 54 corporations under public law such as districts and municipalities, 58 local homeland and history associations, 20 own local associations with 2250 members and 318 direct members. He is a member of the Association of German Mountain and Hiking Clubs .

For the area on the left bank of the Rhine, the Niederrhein Association has the sole right to create and mark hiking trails . The regional network of hiking trails he oversees with the signs X 1 to X 13 as well as a section of the European long-distance hiking trail E8 running on it has a circumference of 1400 km, the local hiking trails still have a total length of 3200 km.

Publications

In its 75th year, the association publishes the quarterly journal Der Niederrhein , which reports not only on the life of the association but also on the local history, natural history and nature conservation work of its working groups. The articles come not only from local researchers, also numerous well-known authors made contributions for the journal, z. E.g. the Lower Rhine writers Otto Brües , Leonhard Jansen and Ferdinand Oppenberg , the musicologist and folk song researcher Ernst Klusen , the archaeologist and monument conservator Hugo Borger , the botanists Albert Steeger and Hans Höppner , the landscape ecologist Jochen Hild and the cabaret artist and poet Hanns Dieter Hüsch ( Christmas Eve on the Lower Rhine ). He also publishes the Lower Rhine yearbooks , publications on the nature and history of the Lower Rhine , hiking maps and hiking guides with local history.
