The Association of German Mountain and Hiking Clubs e. V. , in short: Deutscher Wanderverband , based in Stuttgart , was founded as the umbrella organization for all German hiking clubs in Fulda in 1883, initially under the name of the Association of German Tourist Associations . The official abbreviation is the German Hiking Association . The office is in Kassel .

Structure and activities

There are about 600,000 members. Nationwide, the members are spread across 58 regional hiking clubs with around 3,100 local groups. Children and young members of the regional hiking clubs are represented by the DWV's youth organization, the German Hiking Youth (DWJ).

As the main event of the association, the German Hiking Day has been held every summer since 1912, with around 30,000 participants alternating between the various German low mountain ranges.

One focus of the association's work in recent years has been the establishment of environmentally friendly long-distance hiking trails that are particularly interesting for tourism and culture. To this end, the Wanderbaren Germany initiative was founded.

The association is a member of the German Nature Conservation Ring , the German Tourism Association and the Association of German Nature Parks .

history

After the first mountain and hiking clubs were established in Germany and Austria-Hungary in 1862, Georg Haus from the Taunusklub Stammklub, founded in 1868 , tried to establish a central tourist association since 1879. In 1882, on the initiative of Haus, a committee was convened. This provisional central committee drew up a draft statute. At the constituent meeting on May 14, 1883 in Fulda , the Association of German Tourist Associations , initially joined by 15 hiking associations with over 11,000 members, was founded with Haus as the first chairman. In 1884 the tourist was introduced as an association organ. As early as 1886, 22 clubs with 21,200 members were organized in the association.

One focus of the association's work in the beginning was the creation of an accommodation network for hikers and youth groups. From 1900 onwards, Friedrich Hermann Löscher , Eugen Nägele , Richard Schirrmann and Wilhelm Münker were instrumental in this . In 1912 there were already 727 accommodation houses for young people. After the First World War , the German Youth Hostel Association emerged from the hiking association on the initiative of Wilhelm Münker and Richard Schirrmann .

In 1902 the German-speaking hiking clubs from Austria-Hungary joined the association. In 1908 (the association now had 60 associations with 160,000 members) it changed its name to the Association of German Mountain and Hiking Associations . In 1921, the number of member associations had grown to almost 100 despite the loss of territory as a result of the war. In 1931 the stylized fir was chosen as the association's emblem, which is still valid today.

After the National Socialists came to power, the organization of hikers, which at that time had 259,000 members, was brought into line. The so-called Reichsführer der Wanderer, Ferdinand Werner , ordered all Jews and Marxists to be excluded from the member associations as early as July 1933 . Only NSDAP members were allowed to act as chairmen of the subdivisions; the youth groups were to be transferred to the Hitler Youth or the Bund Deutscher Mädel . In 1941 the delegates in Würzburg opposed a standard statute for incorporation into the Reich Sports Association.

After the war, 36 hiking clubs were established in the western zones by 1948. The association was re-established in April 1950 in Königstein by 32 member associations, and Georg Fahrbach became the first post-war president . 1951 was founded with Fahrbach as co-founder, the working group of German homeland, hiking and nature conservation associations. In 1952 an organisationally independent youth association was set up in Bad Berneck with the German Wanderjugend . The German association played a major role in the founding of the European Hiking Association (EWV) in 1969, of which Georg Fahrbach became the first president.

Regional associations were founded in the second half of the 1970s. The German Hiking Association has been a recognized nature conservation organization since 1976 and, according to Section 29 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act, is entitled to comment on interventions in the natural balance. In 1976 Konrad Schubach took over the chairmanship of the association after the sudden death of Fahrbach. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the association, Karl Carstens took over the patronage as Federal President of the German Hiking Day 1983 in Fulda and donated the Eichendorff plaque . Starting in 1989, chairman Schubach mainly supported the reorganization of the former member associations of the German Association for Hiking, Mountaineering and Orienteering , in which hikers were organized in the GDR , and the establishment of regional associations in East Germany. In 1990 the first all-German hiking day was held in Arnsberg and the first re-established hiking clubs of the new federal states were included in the association. In 1996 the first German Hiking Day after 60 years on the East German side took place in Wernigerode .

In 2001, the association started the Hiking Germany initiative together with the German Tourism Association . In 2002 the first edition of the association magazine Wanderzeit was published. In 2004, the Quality Trail Walkable Germany was awarded for the first time . The association has been awarding the German hiking badge since 2010 .
