Eugen Nägele (born February 10, 1856 in Murrhardt ; † December 16, 1937 in Tübingen ) was a German conservationist , educator and local researcher .

Eugen Nägele was the son of Ferdinand Nägele , master locksmith, foundation curator and later revolutionary and member of parliament in Frankfurt's Paulskirche in 1848 , and his wife Luise, née Kapp. He attended the Latin school in Murrhardt and in 1870 switched to the Urach Evangelical Theological Seminary . As a student, he became a member of the Roigel Royal Society in Tübingen in 1874 . From 1874 to 1878 he studied classical philology and philosophy in the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Tübingen . At the age of twenty he wrote a city and hiking guide for Tübingen and its surroundings . In 1879 he started his first job at the Esslinger Gymnasium. King Karl I of Württemberg made him head of the Latin school in Waiblingen in 1881 . From 1884 he held the post of rector of the grammar school in Geislingen an der Steige with the title of professor . From 1889 to 1919 Nägele was a grammar school professor in Tübingen, from 1896-1906 he was the director of the girls' college .

In 1895, the Reich Limes Commission appointed him route commissioner on Württemberg soil. A year later he excavated the Waldmössingen fort on their behalf . He was one of the founding members of the Swabian Alb Association (SAV) in 1888/1889 . From 1890 to 1913 he was its deputy chairman and from 1913 to 1933 chairman. From 1889 to 1930 he was the first editor of the " Blätter des Schwäbischen Albverein ". In 1898 he founded the magazine " Tübinger Blätter ", where he worked as an editor until 1928.

In 1897, together with the Württemberg Black Forest Association, he founded the Swabian Youth Hostel Association, a forerunner of the German Youth Hostel Association , and assumed its chairmanship. From 1900 he was significantly involved in the creation of an accommodation network for hikers and youth groups in the Association of German Tourist Associations . In this position, on October 20, 1935 - surrounded by the local NSDAP officials - he walled the foundation stone of the "House of Youth" - the youth hostel - a showpiece of the Tübingen NSDAP. Nägele was not happy that the National Socialists took possession of his work, but he could not escape their expectations.

Nägele was a member of the Württemberg state parliament of the People's Party from 1907 to 1912 and from 1914 to 1918.

Nägele was a supporter of the naturalist Robert Gradmann and was in contact with the writer Weinland , the creator of Rulaman , and other greats of his time. On December 7, 1937, Nägele suffered a femoral neck fracture in an accident and was admitted to the surgical clinic in Tübingen. There he fell ill with severe bilateral pneumonia , from which he died on the evening of December 16, 1937. Eugen Nägele was buried in Tübingen.

Services

Eugen Nägele still set valid standards in the area of ​​local history / local research and youth hostels. As a local researcher, he was instrumental in researching the Celtic Heuneburg , the Roman Limes , the Roman roads and in the reconstruction of the Hohenstaufen Chapel. His work on Schubart , Uhland and Württemberg folklore was groundbreaking. His publications in the papers of the Swabian Alb Association are a rich source for studying history and nature in Württemberg .
