Karl Ludwig Valentin Salzmann (born May 23, 1821 in Esslingen am Neckar ; † January 17, 1890 there ) was one of the founders and the first chairman of the Swabian Alb Association .

Life

Valentin Salzmann's father was the owner of the Reichsapotheke in Esslingen. The family originally came from Strasbourg. Salzmann himself once mentioned that he was proud that three of his ancestors were surgeon professors at the University of Strasbourg. Up to the age of 18 he was a pupil of the then famous educational institution in Stetten im Remstal . From 1840 to 1844 he studied medicine in Tübingen , where he became a member of the Corps Rhenania . In 1847 Valentin Salzmann settled in Esslingen as a general practitioner, he practiced until his death.

As early as 1863 he founded the Esslingen Beautification Association. On August 13, 1888, at the invitation of Valentin Salzmann, the representatives of several beautification societies met in Plochingen with the aim of jointly improving the work of the existing beautification societies on the Albtrauf . At the constituent meeting on November 12, 1888 in Plochingen, he presented the first draft of the Albverein's statutes, which were finally brought into being a little later. Salzmann was unanimously elected as the first chairman and held this office until his death in 1890.

A monument in Esslingen, which was erected in 1921, is dedicated to Valentin Salzmann and Ernst Camerer , who took over the management of the Albverein after Salzmann. Salzmann is buried in the Ebershaldenfriedhof there. The Salzmannstein in the Randecker Maar is also named after Valentin Salzmann, as is the Salzmannweg in Esslingen.
