His name is closely connected with the renaissance of the hardwood industry and the transition to near-natural silviculture in Baden-Württemberg . From 1991 to 2001 he was President of the Swabian Alb Association .

Life

Origin and youth

Peter Stoll came from a forestry family. His father Otto Stoll was later as head forester wood sales at the forestry directorate North Württemberg. Born in Crailsheim, he came to Stuttgart in 1935, where he grew up. In 1944 the family was bombed out and found a new home in Kirchheim unter Teck .

Career path in the state forest administration of Baden-Württemberg

After graduating from high school, Stoll studied forest science at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg . In 1954 he was reciprocated in the Corps Suevia Munich and Corps Suevia Freiburg . He completed his legal clerkship in the state forest administration of Baden-Württemberg. After being accepted into the civil service, he was initially employed as a forest judge , among other things . In 1967 he was appointed head of the Langenau Forestry Office . In this forest district of the Ulmer Alb , which is characterized by hardwood , he got the long-neglected oak breeding going again. This not only set the course for his forestry office, but also ushered in the renaissance of the oak industry throughout Baden-Württemberg. In addition, Stoll worked closely with the private forest owners, whereby the promotion of the farm forest was always a special concern of his.

Through his work in the Langenau Forestry Office, the Ministry of Agriculture also became aware of him and brought him to Stuttgart in 1974 as head of the personnel and organization department of the State Forest Administration department . The background was the administrative reform associated with the regional and district reform, in the course of which it was necessary to reorganize the forest district administration. Under the leadership of Stoll, a concept was developed that was tailored to the new municipality and forest directorate boundaries, which reduced the state forest offices of Baden-Württemberg from 238 to 190. This could be implemented in broad agreement with the corporate and private forest owners and without major personal hardship.

In 1977 he was appointed head of the Tübingen Forestry Directorate, which he headed as forest president until his professional retirement in 1996. In particular, he supported the revitalization of the hardwood industry and the transition to near-natural silviculture during this time. Forward-looking silvicultural treatment models have been developed for this purpose in the Tübingen Forest Directorate.

Peter Stoll made his voluntary work in the Swabian Alb Association known far beyond the forestry specialist circles . He has been a member of its main committee since 1979 and was vice-president from 1985 to 1991. In 1991 he succeeded Helmut Schönnamsgruber as President . He stayed in this office for ten years until he handed it over to Hans-Ulrich Rauchfuß at the 2001 Annual General Meeting in Crailsheim, where he was born .

Under Stoll's presidency, the Swabian Alb Club was able to develop into a comprehensive local club . In addition to the classic specialist areas of hiking , the maintenance of the network of hiking trails and maps, this includes other specialist areas such as the preservation of Swabian cultural assets, preservation of monuments , maintenance of customs and the local dialect, singing, folk dance and music. In cooperation with the Black Forest Association , the Baden-Württemberg Home and Hiking Academy was founded in 2001 .

It was also a particular concern of Stoll to promote nature conservation work in the Swabian Alb Association and thus create a broad impact. For this purpose, he introduced the nature conservation day and with it the landscape maintenance day in alternation every year and created the maintenance team with a full-time leader and associated equipment. In addition, Peter Stoll achieved that the Swabian Alb Association was recognized as a nature conservation association in accordance with Section 29 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act . His further demands included designating a Swabian Alb nature park.
