history

prehistory

Langenau is located in the Eastern Alamann area, where the custom of horse sacrifice and horse burial was particularly common. Two burial sites were archaeologically examined in 1971 and three in 1990 . The found horse burials clearly show the Alemannic burial rites.

middle Ages

The settlement was named after the river Nau as Naue or as Nawe for the first time in a document dated September 9, 1003 .

In the High Middle Ages, Langenau belonged to the Duchy of Swabia . King Conrad III. held an imperial assembly in Langenau in 1150. Land ownership and local rule changed in 1238 from the Counts of Dillingen to the Lords of Albeck , in inheritance around 1250 to the Margraviate of Burgau and in 1293 to the Counts of Werdenberg-Albeck . In 1376, Emperor Karl IV confirmed the town charter for Langenau, but in 1377 Langenau fell to the imperial city of Ulm , which revoked the town charter for Langenau and made it the seat of a bailiff from Ulm. The weaving trade achieved long-lasting importance in the village , but this exposed the workers to the strong economic fluctuations in the textile trade. The resulting dissatisfaction also caused some Langenau weavers to join the rebels in the peasant war . After participating in the looting of the Elchingen monastery , the rebels were defeated in the Battle of Leipheim in 1525.

Early modern age

In 1531 Ulm introduced the Reformation in Langenau. During the Thirty Years' War , Langenau had to accept heavy loads due to the constant movement of troops and billeting. Something similar had to be endured again and again during the subsequent cabinet wars and during the coalition wars.

Württemberg time

During the mediatization , Langenau first fell to the Electorate of Bavaria in 1802 and to the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1810 due to the border treaty of 1810 . The municipality was assigned to the Oberamt Ulm in accordance with the new administrative structure of Württemberg and raised to the status of town in 1848. The number of the predominantly Protestant residents was around 3,600 this year. In the 19th century the city of Langenau was an important location for a weekly fruit market. From 1875 the connection to the network of the Württemberg railway took place .

During the district reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg , Langenau came to the Ulm district in 1938 .

post war period

After the Second World War, the city of Langenau fell into the American zone of occupation and in 1945 came to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

In the course of the municipal reform in Baden-Württemberg , the municipalities of Albeck and Hörvelsingen were incorporated into Langenau on February 29, 1972, and the municipality of Göttingen was incorporated into Langenau on April 1, 1972, and the thus enlarged city in 1973 became part of the new Alb-Danube as part of the district reform in Baden-Württemberg -Circle affiliated.

coat of arms

  • The coat of arms of the city of Langenau from 1855 shows a jumping black horse in a split shield, split below, in gold above. At the bottom, in red, hanging from three rings, a triple-lobed, golden-fringed silver leaning flag, at the back divided by black and silver. The jumping horse draws attention to the horse breeding that was once important in Langenau. The church flag refers to the Werdenbergers as lords of Albeck. The colors black and silver indicate that it belonged to the free imperial city of Ulm from 1377 to 1802.
  • The coat of arms of Albeck, established in 1933, shows a split shield in front in red a silver heraldic lily (lily staff), in the back in silver two red diagonal bars.
  • The Göttingen coat of arms is divided into red and gold by a lily cut.
  • The Hörvelsingen coat of arms shows the three-lobed red leaning flag of the Count Palatine of Tübingen , one branch of which formed the aristocratic family of the Werdenbergs, under a black shield head, covered with a golden lens stem, which indicates the earlier lens cultivation .
