history

Until the 19th century

In 1294 Konrad von Plochingen sold Elchingen (today's Unterelchingen) to the Cistercian Monastery of Salem , which (Unter-) Elchingen remained in its possession until the secularization in 1802. (Unter-) Elchingen never belonged to the (Ober-) Elchingen monastery . With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803 Ober- and Unterelchingen and Thalfingen came to Bavaria. Even before that, on August 29, 1802, Bavarian troops had occupied the area around Ulm.

The foundation of the Oberelching monastery is dated to the beginning of the 12th century. During a fire in 1395 all authentic documents were destroyed, and so even the date of the consecration of August 15, 1128 could not be proven. The Benedictines moved in at the donor's will .

Elchingen became known through the Battle of Elchingen as part of the Third Coalition War : On October 14, 1805, Napoleon's troops under the command of Marshal Ney defeated an Austrian army, which led to the defeat of the Austrian army. The next day the siege of Ulm began, where Karl Mack von Leiberich finally had to surrender. Marshal Ney received the newly created title of Duc d'Elchingen from Napoleon in 1806 . The place name Elchingen can be found on the inside of the Arc de Triomphe (Triumphal Arch) in Paris .

For the region, the Napoleonic victory meant the end of the supremacy of Austria and the free imperial city of Ulm and, as a result, a reorganization of the territory of Württemberg and Bavaria .
