Senden is a town in the Swabian district of Neu-Ulm . The city belongs to the Donau-Iller region in Central Swabia . It is located 12 km south of Ulm and 45 km north of Memmingen .

Geographical location

The city of Senden is located on the Iller and borders directly on Baden-Württemberg . The city belongs to the Donau-Iller public transport network . To the Unterm Schloß district to the west of the Iller, the street leads a short distance over the area of ​​the neighboring municipality of Illerkirchberg , which makes this district a functional exclave .

Groundwater

At the beginning of the 1990s it became known that the groundwater of Sendens was heavily contaminated. The main cause of the pollution is the former watch factory Senden . For decades, toxic substances such as cyanide and copper sludge as well as suspected carcinogenic, volatile halogenated hydrocarbons are said to have been poured or buried in the ground on the company premises .

In 1993 the watch factory was closed. However, groundwater pollution continues because the source of the pollution is not removed. A soil remediation would be possible. However, the current owner of the watch factory's premises refuses to have the necessary preliminary investigations carried out for a complete groundwater model . The chemicals therefore sink further and further into the groundwater.

Well water should not be used in Senden for watering or cleaning vegetables and fruits. It is also not suitable for bathing, showering, filling paddling pools or watering farm animals.

history

The district of Ay was first mentioned in 1256 as 'Oy situm apud Kirchberg'. From 1507 the Fuggers from Augsburg ruled the town for almost three hundred years. Due to the peace treaty in Preßburg in December 1805, Senden became Bavarian.

In 1862 Senden was connected to the Neu-Ulm – Kempten railway line . Nevertheless, at the beginning of the First World War, Senden only had 62 houses with 308 inhabitants. In 1947, only two years after the end of the Second World War, the Senden watch factory was founded. In 1955, the municipality of Senden was raised to a market under Bavarian municipal law. Twenty years later, on June 7th, 1975, Senden was granted city rights. A few years earlier, the Senden market had expanded considerably as part of the regional reform in Bavaria : on July 1, 1970, the previously independent communities of Hittistetten and Wullenstetten, on July 1, 1971 Ay an der Iller and on July 1, 1972 Witzighausen and the district Freudenegg incorporated into the municipality of Gerlenhofen. Aufheim followed on January 1, 1978.

In 1975 Möbel-Inhofer, now the largest employer in Senden, opened the first furniture store. In contrast, the Senden watch factory was closed again in 1993 due to environmental pollution.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2019, the community grew from 19,330 to 22,529 by 3,199 inhabitants or 16.5%.

In Senden, the largest employer is, by its own account, the largest furniture store in Europe, Möbel Inhofer GmbH & Co. KG. The ESTA Apparatebau GmbH & Co.
