The Danube-Iller-Nahverkehrsverbund GmbH ( DING ) is a traffic group , which is substantially the Württemberg part of the Regional Association Danube-Iller and the Bavarian district of Neu-Ulm covers. It is a mixed association, in whose association the districts and the transport companies each hold half. It was founded on January 1, 1998 and on January 1, 2003, DING merged with the Biberach local transport network. Since then, 34 transport companies, including Deutsche Bahn AG, have been members of the DING. Around 650,000 people live in the 3,410 km² network area. In 2005 a total of 59.2 million passengers were carried.

Spatial demarcation

In Baden-Württemberg, the DING includes the independent city of Ulm and the districts of Alb-Donau and Biberach . The Gerstetten ( Heidenheim district ) and Hohenstadt ( Göppingen district ) tariff areas are also affiliated. In Bavaria, the neighboring district of Neu-Ulm is also a member.

In addition, there are the following partnerships with neighboring transport associations in transition areas in order to mitigate the fare increases through tariff limits:

On January 1, 2017, the transition area in the west was expanded so that the Ulm – Sigmaringen railway from and to Herbertingen and the Herbertingen – Isny railway to Aulendorf , which runs in the bodo and naldo transport associations, can be used for destination and source traffic .

Tariff system

The tariff area of the DING and the adjacent transition areas is divided into tariff cells , which are shown in the cell plan as uniform hexagons. The fare is calculated based on the number of combs that are crossed or touched. A maximum of 9 tariff frames are calculated within the DING; if the transition areas are also affected, the maximum price can be up to 11 cells.

With a rechargeable chip card, the 'DingCard' or 'SchwabenCard', the fare can be paid cashless to the driver or in some vehicles independently (e.g. trams or city buses of the SWU) until 2019, provided that a corresponding device is still available in the vehicle and RBA, vehicles from SWB & RAB) can be debited from so-called DingCard controllers. Until 2018 you received an additional 10% discount on the fare. Multi-trip tickets have been largely replaced by this chip card; apart from time tickets or single tickets paid for in cash at the machine or driver, there are no longer any printed tickets. The transport association regards the chip card system as technically obsolete and will be replaced by a “mobile phone ticket system” on January 1, 2019.

The RUDY project, which has now been completed, has contributed to the improvement of local transport by networking information from various transport companies.

Actions

Since September 22, 2001, the DING has been organizing the " Without a Car" day of action every year , on which all means of transport in the transport association can be used free of charge. Natural history and other tourist tours and events take place here, some of which can be reached by special transport.

The network area is divided into the following area plans:

Expansion plans

There is a planning draft for the expansion of the existing rail network in the transport association to the regional S-Bahn Donau-Iller , which provides , among other things, a line concept with more frequent traffic, the reactivation of the Senden – Weißenhorn railway and a new line between Ehingen and Erbach . The route to Weißenhorn was reactivated in December 2013. The implementation of the concept is planned for the period 2020/2025.
