S-Bahn in Germany

The regional S-Bahn Donau-Iller is a S-Bahn in the traffic and tariff association DING ( Donau-Iller-Nahverkehrsverbund ) in the greater Ulm and Neu-Ulm area . The centerpiece is the Ulm main station , which is to act as a hub between the S-Bahn lines, regional traffic and long-distance traffic. From December 2020 the first regional train lines from Ulm to Illertissen and Weißenhorn are to be officially referred to as "Regio-S-Bahn". The network is expected to be completed by 2030.

planning

In November 2012, the regional association Donau-Iller (RVDI) presented a concept paper for the construction of a S-Bahn in the region. This concept provides eight lines. The project, known as the “Regio-S-Bahn Donau-Iller 202X”, is expected to cost EUR 74 million to expand the infrastructure. The cost-benefit factor should be over 1.7. The realization should take place in several phases. On December 27, 2017, the state of Baden-Württemberg and the city of Ulm signed a cooperation agreement to advance the expansion of the S-Bahn. The city of Ulm, the Alb-Donau district , the district of Biberach and the district of Heidenheim want to work with the neighboring Bavarian region to establish a S-Bahn system with uniform operating standards and coordinated connections. This should enable barrier-free travel and convenient transfers to other modes of transport. A uniform platform height of 55 centimeters is aimed for.

On September 28, 2018, the Bavarian Transport Minister Ilse Aigner signed a cooperation agreement with the Regio-S-Bahn Donau-Iller association in Neu-Ulm. From the minister's point of view, the expansion must begin between Ulm and Memmingen. This is one of the busiest single-track railway lines in Germany, especially in the area between Neu-Ulm and Senden - an average of around 7500 passengers are transported there every day. Capacity expansion and electrification should be carried out synchronously. The route is part of the Bavarian electromobility strategy and has been reserved by the Federal Minister of Transport for the federal special program.

Association "Regio-S-Bahn Donau-Iller"

On December 22nd, 2015, the districts and urban districts united in the RVDI and the district of Heidenheim founded the "Regio-S-Bahn Donau-Iller" association. His goal is to coordinate and implement the first infrastructure measures of the project, such as the construction of 30 stops. Oliver Dümmler is the managing director of the association.

A cost-benefit analysis is to be carried out for the evaluation of the project at the end of 2019, and the results are to be announced in 2021. The states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg each pay one sixth of the costs.

Passenger numbers

The S-Bahn is expected to increase the number of passengers by an average of 33 percent. On all routes, the number of passengers would increase by at least five percent, in some cases these will increase by more than 50 percent - for example on the Danube Valley Railway. On the Südbahn and Brenzbahn, there would be increases in passenger numbers of between 25 and 50 percent. This means that more than 6000 passengers would be transported on the Filstal, Süd and Illertalbahn every day.

Railway lines and expansion measures

Railway route Senden – Weißenhorn

As the first stage of expansion, the route to Weißenhorn went into operation as a regional train when the timetable changed on December 15, 2013. The almost ten kilometer long route between Senden and Weißenhorn was upgraded in summer 2013 and reopened for freight traffic in early September 2013. The trains run from Ulm main station via Neu-Ulm and Senden to Weißenhorn . The Wullenstetten, Witzighausen, Weißenhorn-Eschach and Weißenhorn Bahnhof stops have been newly established. The travel time between the terminal stations is 25 minutes. The trains run every hour, in the long term a 30-minute cycle is sought during rush hour. Stadtwerke Ulm (SWU) acquired the route for a cost of around 10 million euros and upgraded it to run at 100 km / h. They set up the new stops, bridges were renewed and level crossings were modernized.

Southern runway

Once the electrification of the southern line has been completed , two S-Bahn and two Interregio-Express lines will operate on this route. The S-Bahn line S1 will shuttle every hour from Ummendorf via Biberach , Laupheim Stadt and Ulm Hauptbahnhof to Geislingen . Line S7 is to run every hour from Ulm main station to Ummendorf via Laupheim West. During rush hour this will be extended to Aulendorf . The new Ummendorf and Biberach Nord stations are to be approached on this route.

Danube Valley Railway

The S5 and S8 S-Bahn lines and a Regional Express line will operate on the Danube Valley Railway in the future . The S5 trains run every hour from Weißenhorn via Ulm to Blaubeuren. The S8 line runs every hour between Ulm via Blaubeuren and Ehingen to Obermarchtal . This line does not stop between Blaubeuren and Ulm. The new Klingenstein stop is to be built on the S5 S-Bahn line . The new stops Schelklingen Nord, Dettingen, Dintenhofen, Rottenacker, Unter- and Obermarchtal are to be built on the S-Bahn line S8 and the RE line. Transfer options are to be created at the modernized Blaubeuren station between the S-Bahn, Regional Express and bus lines. A 2.85-kilometer route south of Ehingen is to be expanded to double-track.

Filstalbahn

After the long-distance trains will run on the new Wendlingen – Ulm line from 2020 , the S1 line will run from Ummendorf to Geislingen. There should be a connection to the regional train to Stuttgart . A Regional Express and an Interregio Express line are to run on the Filstalbahn in the direction of Stuttgart, and another on the new line and Stuttgart Airport .

Brenzbahn

The Interregio-Express line from Ulm to Aalen will continue to run on the Brenzbahn . The S-Bahn line S3 will run between Ulm and Langenau every hour, during rush hour it will be extended to Sontheim an der Brenz . Line S2 will run every hour between Ulm and Aalen. A regional train line will be set up between Aalen and Heidenheim an der Brenz .

The Brenzbahn is to be expanded to double tracks between Bergenweiler and Sontheim an der Brenz (2.1 km) and between Rammingen and Langenau (5.3 km). The Bergenweiler station is to be relocated and a new Ulm-Messe S-Bahn station is to be built.

Illertalbahn and subsequent routes

The S5 line will run on the Illertalbahn between Senden and Ulm Hauptbahnhof. The S6 line will run every hour between Ulm and Buxheim via Senden, Illertissen and Memmingen. During rush hour, the S6 line between Illertissen and Ulm will be extended to every 30 minutes. An hourly regional express line runs from Ulm via Illertissen and Memmingen to Kempten (Allgäu) .

The Illertalbahn is to be expanded to two tracks between the Gerlenhofen and Senden stations and between Kellmünz and Pleß. The Gerlenhofen stop is to be relocated and the stations Senden Nord, Pless, Fellheim, Heimertingen, Memmingen- Amendingen , Memmingen-Klinikum and Buxheim are to be newly established.

Mittelschwabenbahn

Line S4 is to run every hour on the Mittelschwabenbahn from Günzburg via Krumbach (Swabia) to Pfaffenhausen , and every two hours it is extended via Mindelheim and Memmingen to Tannheim . In the rush hour, the trains already run from Ulm via Nersingen to Günzburg.
