The Buchloe – Memmingen line is a 45-kilometer single-track, non-electrified main line in Bavaria . It connects the cities of Buchloe and Memmingen and is part of the railway axis from Augsburg to Lindau.

History and route

The route branches off from the Allgäu Railway southwest of Buchloe station

In 1872 the line from Buchloe to Memmingen was built. The route served to close the gap between Buchloe and Leutkirch .

disused Ungerhausen station

From the Türkheim train station a branch line branches off to Bad Wörishofen in a southerly direction and the Staudenbahn in a northerly direction . The Mittelschwabenbahn runs from Mindelheim in the direction of Krumbach – Günzburg. There are some through trains from the Mittelschwabenbahn in the direction of Memmingen . A stretch to Ottobeuren branched off east of Ungerhausen and has since been converted into a cycle path . From approx. 1935 to approx. 1975 a siding led from Ungerhausen train station to Memmingerberg Air Base .

Mindelheim crossing station

Trains from / to Augsburg and Munich run every hour on the Buchloe – Memmingen section.

Since December 2011, railcars of the 642 series , and in some cases also the 612 series , have been running from Augsburg to Memmingen every two hours . In Türkheim train station these are separated and a railcar drives to Bad Wörishofen ( Kneipp-Lechfeld-Bahn ).

Since June 2015, regional trains to and from Munich have been running almost exclusively as double-decker sets with class 245 locomotives , rarely 218 . From 2017, these services were partially taken over by the 612 series .

Most of the regional trains meet on schedule in Buchloe and Mindelheim. In addition, train crossings take place - often due to delays - at all remaining crossing stations on the route. In Mindelheim station , the regional trains will be overtaken by the Eurocitys according to the schedule. For better accessibility of the regional trains Memmingen - Ulm Hauptbahnhof and from there to long-distance traffic, some additional services are offered between Mindelheim and Memmingen.

future

As part of the expansion of the Munich – Lindau route, the section is expected to be electrified by the end of 2020.

This will, for example, reduce the travel time from Memmingen to the state capital Munich by around 30 minutes. Lindau can then be reached from Munich in less than two hours and Zurich in three and a half hours.

After the expansion, the Mindelheim – Memmingen section with the Ulm – Neu-Ulm – Günzburg – Mindelheim – Memmingen line could be integrated into the planned Donau-Iller regional S-Bahn .

In November 2017, the Stetten (Swabia) , Sontheim (Swabia) train stations and the Ungerhausen depot were connected to the electronic interlocking (ESTW) Memmingen.

In addition, the train stations in Türkheim, Stetten and Sontheim were made accessible by autumn 2018. At the same time, the historic, almost 145-year-old vaulted masonry bridge over the Auerbach and the 2013 state road near Stetten was demolished in the first half of 2018 and replaced with a reinforced concrete bridge.

The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony took place in Memmingen on March 23, 2018 - with the simultaneous start of construction work and a six-month line closure up to and including November 14, 2018.

From December 2020, the existing two-hour direct connection from DB Regio between Munich and Memmingen, serving all regional train stops from Geltendorf to Memmingen, will in future be operated electrically. New from December 2021 is an additional, fast, electric regional service every two hours from around 8 a.m. on the Munich - Memmingen - Lindau Insel - Lindau-Reutin line. The train stations in Munich-Pasing, Buchloe, Türkheim, Mindelheim and all stops from Memmingen to Lindau are served. The fast regional traffic is driven by Go Ahead with electric Flirt multiple units. The Eurocity trains between Munich and Zurich, via Buchloe, Memmingen, Lindau, will be operated by SBB with ETR 610 from December 2020 .
