The Bregenz station is in front of the station Bregenz harbor and stop Riedenburg the largest of the three stations of the Vorarlberg capital Bregenz . It is located on the Lindau – Bludenz railway line and is served by long-distance and regional trains of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). It also acts as one of the junctions of the Vorarlberg S-Bahn .

history

In 1847 the first ideas to build a railway line in Vorarlberg became public. Due to the geographical location of the state, separated by the Arlberg from the rest of the country, the plans were delayed, they were only taken up again after railway lines were built in nearby German and Swiss countries. Finally, construction was decided in 1869 and started in 1870. A private company called Vorarlberger Bahn was founded in 1871 for this purpose . On July 1, 1872, the Lochau – Bludenz line was opened to traffic, and Bregenz also had its first train station. With the opening of the originally private, narrow-gauge Bregenzerwaldbahn , the station was finally expanded into a branch station in 1902 . Due to storm damage, this was shut down in stages until 1983.

In 1989 the original Bregenz train station was demolished and rebuilt 500 meters further west. Today, turquoise dominates the station in the area of the reception building and on the platform roofs.

New building

For several years now, the city of Bregenz and the state of Vorarlberg have been planning the new construction of the Bregenz train station, which is clearly showing its age. In the course of the Seequartier, a hotel was to be built on the current station site. After the "Seestadt" project was paused due to numerous protests, particularly by Vorarlberg architects, the Vorarlberg design advisory board met in 2019 to approve specific plans for the new building.

On June 12, 2019, the city of Bregenz, ÖBB and the state of Vorarlberg jointly presented the plan for the conversion or new construction of the Bregenz train station: With projected construction costs of 77 million euros, the train station is to be built according to plans by the renowned Bregenz architects Dietrich / Untertrifaller Architects will essentially be rebuilt.

location

Today's through station Bregenz is located near the city center in close proximity to the shores of Lake Constance . The ship landing stage is also nearby, but is directly accessible from the Bregenz Hafen stop. In the station itself there is an ÖBB travel center and various shops for travel needs and restaurants.
