history

The history of broadcasting in Vorarlberg begins with the construction of the Lauterach transmitter in 1933. This was occupied by the Wehrmacht in 1938 and almost blown up during World War II . In 1945 the provisional studio in the town hall of Dornbirn was the first radio station to broadcast after the collapse of the Third Reich . In 1946 the Vorarlberg transmitter became the property of the state, and a year later 6,000 radio listeners were registered in Vorarlberg. In 1954 the "Ländle-Rundfunk" was incorporated into the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation against the will of the State of Vorarlberg. On December 3, 1954 it was said for the first time: "This is the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, Radio Vorarlberg."

For historical reasons, ORF Vorarlberg is not located in the state capital Bregenz, but in Dornbirn. The building was opened in 1972 according to plans by the world-famous architect Gustav Peichl , added a television extension at the beginning of the 1980s and completely renovated inside and out between 2001 and 2005. It retained its silver-gray finish and is therefore the only so-called “Peichl cake” that has essentially retained its original shape. For this reason, the Landesfunkhaus Vorarlberg is also a listed building . Since 2012 the building has been continuously adapted, trimmed and equipped with the latest technology for radio and television.
