history

Raggal describes itself as a "Walser community". Before the Walsers colonized the Große Walsertal or Raggal, the Rhaeto-Romans were already in Raggal, which is indicated by many field names. Presumably the Rhaeto-Romans were pushed back by the Walser settlement or there was a mixture.

The Walser dialect is still spoken by many Raggallers. There are differences in dialect in every place in the Großer Walsertal and even (slightly) in the districts.

The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria (Freiburg im Breisgau). From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria , then again to Austria .

Raggal has belonged to the Austrian state of Vorarlberg since it was founded in 1861. Around 1865, attempts were made to exploit the Raggal medicinal spring commercially, but this only succeeded for a short time and was of regional importance.

The place was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955.

As of June 30, 2018, 869 people lived in Raggal with a main residence and 34 people with a secondary residence. 97 people are foreigners with their main residence. There are around 360 households in the Raggal community.

From 2001 to 2011 the migration balance was so negative (−96) that it could not be offset by the more positive birth balance and the population decreased.
