history

The place including the parish church was first mentioned in a document in 842 as "Turingos cum ecclesia" (in German "Thuringia with a church"). The current structure of the church was built between 1712 and 1714.

The Veste Blumenegg was built under the Counts of Montfort in the 13th century . In 1405 it was destroyed in a peasant uprising. After its reconstruction, it fell victim to fires in 1650 and 1774. It was not rebuilt after the last fire.

With the acquisition of the rule Blumenegg, which was formerly owned by the Weingarten monastery , by the Habsburgs in 1804, Thuringia became part of Austria.

In 1837 the Scot John Douglass, the grandfather of the writer Norman Douglas , founded a textile factory and thus brought economic growth to the town. In the years 1836 to 1837 he had the Falkenhorst villa built on a hill .

In 1849 the previously unified Thuringia and Bludesch were separated into two independent communities.

Population development

On December 31, 2002 the community, including the second residences, had 2,272 inhabitants. The proportion of foreigners was 10.2 percent.

Until 1991 the birth balance and migration balance were positive. From 1991 to 2001 immigration and emigration were balanced, after 2001 the migration balance became negative, but could be offset by the high birth rate.

The coat of arms of Thuringia appeared for the first time with Georg Wegelin , the abbot of the Reichsstift Weingarten (1613 to 1627) and is based on the coat of arms of the imperial rule Blumenegg , whose former official seat was the place.

The municipality was given a coat of arms by the state government in 1929, which is based on the aforementioned: It consists of a shield divided five times by silver and blue, in which the three blue stripes each have four stylized gray clouds.
This element also appears in the coats of arms of the other Blumenegg communities Bludesch , Ludesch and Thüringerberg .

Culture and sights

The Falkenhorst villa was built in 1836/37 by the industrialist John Douglass. The architecture of the villa is based on the shape of the simple English country house - based on the villa buildings of the Italian Renaissance.
In 1838 the property was bought by Lady Margarethe Jane Douglass and in 1891 it passed to her grandson John William Douglass.
The textile manufacturer Rudolf Kastner acquired the factory and the villa in 1909. In 1985 the factory and in 1997 also the villa with the surrounding park were finally acquired by the municipality of Thuringia. Since then, various cultural events have taken place there - including the “Blumenegger Summer”.

Economy and Infrastructure

The economy is characterized by the metalworking industry (including a Hilti factory), carpet weaving, wood processing and some summer tourism.

In 2003 there were 32 commercial enterprises with 604 employees and 60 apprentices on site. There were 911 employees subject to wage tax. Agriculture plays an important role. The proportion of agricultural land in the total area is 42.3 percent.
