The Montjola waterfall has a main head of about 30 m and is located at the northern end of the municipality of Thuringia in Vorarlberg , Austria . The total height of fall, over several steps up to the power house of the Schwarzbach power station , is around 80 m.
The waterfall has been designated as a "Vorarlberg natural monument" since 1955.
Geography / topography
The waterfall and the above-lying plateau Quadern was formed by a meltwater flow to the side of the Ice Age Ill glacier. The Montjola waterfall is part of the Schwarzbach outflow, whereby part of the water that was collected shortly before in the Montjola ponds (dammed up in 1837) on the Quadern plateau is also discharged into the Schwarzbach power station via a penstock . Since the new power plant went into operation in 2014, depending on the amount of precipitation, only enough water has been withdrawn from the Schwarzbach that this does not significantly impair the Montjola waterfall. The minimum amount of water that has to be led over the waterfall is 90 liters / second.
A hiking trail (waterfall path) and an old pressure pipeline, which formerly supplied the spinning and weaving mill of John Douglass and partners, run parallel to the waterfall . The Montjola waterfall or the easily technically realizable and usable drop height was u. a. decisive for the establishment of this textile factory around 1837.
The Montjola waterfall is located about 400 m north of the town center and the populated area of Thuringia. The city center of Feldkirch is about 15 km as the crow flies and about 35 km to Lake Constance .
