history
The place was founded at the time of ore mining on Kristberg and Bartholomäberg and was first mentioned in 1412 .
St. Anton had its chapel and a chaplain as early as 1419. The chapel is said to have been built as early as 1376 by a "noble von Zalans".
The little village that was once called “Prazalanz” got its name from Saint Anthony the Great (also Antonius the Hermit ).
The place belonged to Bludenz for a long time until it became an independent municipality in 1776 . Like all places in Vorarlberg, St. Anton was ruled by the Habsburgs alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria (Freiburg im Breisgau).
From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria , then again to Austria . St. Anton im Montafon has belonged to the Austrian state of Vorarlberg since it was founded in 1861.
Since 1905 St. Anton has been connected to the Montafonerbahn line that was in operation at the time .
In June 1910 the place was hit by a devastating flood of the century - heavy rains and the delayed snowmelt combined. In the process, more than half of the railway line in the Montafon was destroyed and between July 1910 and September 1911 a rail replacement service with horse-drawn vehicles had to be set up between Lorüns and St. Anton.
The place was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955 . In 1947 the parish amalgamation with Vandans , which had existed since 1943, was lifted again.
Gypsum was mined in St. Anton until the 20th century. The first evidence of this dates back to the early 18th century. The construction of a Bremsbergbahn made it easier to transport gypsum - until then, the gypsum rock had to be brought to the processing site in the valley by horse and cart. In 1950 the narrow-gauge tracks were replaced by a material ropeway. The dismantling had to be stopped in 1977 because no further concession for the dismantling was granted.
Population development
The proportion of foreigners at the end of 2002 was 9.7 percent.
From 1981 to 1991, both the birth balance and the migration balance were positive. After that, emigration increased, but was offset by the birth rate until 2011.
politics
The community council consists of twelve members. After the municipal council election in 2015 , the list “St. Antön People's Party and Free Candidates ”as the only party to take over all twelve municipal council mandates.
