Light in the dark
Licht ins Dunkel is the largest humanitarian aid campaign in Austria and an association based in Vienna .
Organization and history
The first campaign was initiated in 1973 by the then ORF regional director of Lower Austria , Kurt Bergmann . A visit to the handicapped village of Sollenau had inspired him. The first broadcast was on the radio; the result of the donation campaign was (converted) 2,500 euros. From 2009, the charity campaign was headed by the former commercial director of ORF Elisabeth “Sissy” Mayerhoffer (1955–2018).
The campaign has been on television since 1978. Every Christmas Eve , the ORF presents a 14-hour television program that asks for donations for social welfare and disability projects in Austria .
The 2.2 million viewers donated around 5.7 million euros on such an evening (2010; 2009: 5.5 million euros, 2013: 5.5 million euros); Benefit projects throughout the year generate a further 6.5 million euros.
The association exists since 1989, the
- the Lebenshilfe Austria
- Save the child
- the Society of Austrian Children's Villages, GÖK
- the Kinderfreunde Austria
- the UNICEF
and since 2001 too
belong.
The light of peace has been an integral part of the campaign since 1986 .
In 1993, the idea was taken up by Bavarian television and implemented as Sternstunden .
In 1997 and 2003, on the occasion of the 25th and 30th anniversary of the campaign, a special post stamp was issued by the Austrian Post.
The current president is the politician Kurt Nekula .
criticism
The donation campaign has been criticized by people with disabilities, among others. Like many other events of this kind, it runs on the path of compassion and people with disabilities are not shown as full members of our society, but as people who need our pity. It is also criticized that companies buy themselves free of their responsibility through donations . BIZEPS chairman Martin Ladstätter criticized: "Charity formats such as 'Licht ins Dunkel' create a completely false, distorted image of people with disabilities and make them the pitiful object of the care of others". The name of the fundraising campaign is also repeatedly the subject of criticism. However, to this day, Licht ins Dunkel refuses to change its name. In November 2007, the ÖVP member Franz-Joseph Huainigg started a campaign that he called Not Into Darkness .
