Franz-Joseph Huainigg suffered severe disabilities in the first year of life, presumably due to a vaccination, and has since been dependent on a wheelchair . He received his doctorate in German. In the 1990s, Huainigg founded the Wiener KrüppelKabarett .

From December 20, 2002 to October 27, 2008, he was a member of the National Council for the ÖVP and initially resigned from parliament after the 2008 National Council election. After Beatrix Karl moved to the federal government, Huainigg moved back to the National Council on January 27, 2010. For the National Council election on September 29, 2013 , he ran for 12th place on the ÖVP federal list. After the departure of Michael Spindelegger , who again became Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister in the government, Huainigg moved up to the National Council. For the 2017 National Council election , it was no longer nominated by the ÖVP, which has now come under new leadership .

Huainigg was the disability spokesman for the ÖVP. He is married and has a daughter and a foster son.

In 2007 Huainigg founded the Austrian literary prize "Ohrenschmaus" for people with learning difficulties, which has been awarded annually since then.

In 2007, as a reaction to the “ Licht ins Dunkel ” campaign, which was extensively shown on Austrian television, Huainigg initiated the “Not into the dark” campaign, which criticized the false image of the disabled as objects of pity spread by the media and instead called for better social integration.

In 2013, Huainigg initiated the website rechtsleicht.at - making politics understandable , on which political terms and processes are explained in simple language .

In 2017, Huainigg left the National Council after 15 years. He says goodbye with a much respected speech and a farewell poem about "God and the world". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUJ9JWAu3a0&t=33s .

God and the world

As a child, my legs were suddenly paralyzed. I cried and no longer understood God and the world.

Then God said: I will take away the strength of your legs and give you slowness.

So I discovered a new world, slowly crawling on the floor.

As a teenager, I suddenly couldn't walk with crutches.

I cried and no longer understood God and the world.

Then God said: I will take the strength in your arms and give you wit and irony in return.

So I discovered a new world in a wheelchair and made people laugh on the cabaret stage.

Years later, I couldn't move my arms or legs. I cried and no longer understood God and the world.

Then God said: The less you move, the more you move.

So I started to change the world a little and became a politician.

Today I can no longer breathe without a machine. I cried and no longer understood God and the world.

Then God said: I will take away the strength of your lungs and give you a long breath. To fight for the dignity of life.
