The Bregenzerwald Landbus (originally called the Wälderbus ) is part of the Vorarlberg Landbus system and connects the Bregenz and Dornbirn lowlands with the Bregenzerwald in the state of Vorarlberg .

The system is sponsored and ordered by the Regional Planning Association (REGIO) Bregenzerwald, an interest group of 24 communities in the Bregenzerwald. All services are ordered by the REGIO from ÖBB-Postbus , which in turn delegates 40% of the services to private subcontractors. The largest private subcontractor is BregenzerwaldBus GmbH , a joint venture between several private bus companies.

History of the Bregenzerwald Landbus

A typical forest bus ( Steyr-Mercedes SML 14H 256 ) in 1994 at Bregenz station (line 25)

The basic concept of the Wälderbus , a bus system with regular traffic that did justice to the demanding topography (very many side valleys) of the Bregenzerwald, was developed by the Swiss company Metron in 1993. The forest bus system went into operation a year later.

By and large, the system from that time is still in operation today, but it was redesigned and rebranded, analogous to the other bus routes in Vorarlberg, to the Bregenzerwald regional bus.

Since the completion of the Achrain tunnel between Alberschwende and Schwarzach would have meant that the buses would have lost a lot of time compared to motorized private transport according to the previous timetable , a new route concept was developed by the Swiss transport planning office Müller, Romann and Schuppisser, which should take effect from spring 2009. However, large parts of this concept have been rejected. On July 11, 2011, the following points were implemented, which mean faster and more frequent connections to the Rhine Valley:

  • The new line 37 runs through the Achrain tunnel and from Dornbirn Nord to Wolfurt via the A14 .
  • Line 41 runs every hour from Monday to Friday between Sibratsgälle and Dornbirn, previously mostly only from Müselbach to Sibratsgälle.

These two lines condense lines 35 and 40 on the jointly traveled sections (Mellau - Alberschwende or Müselbach - Dornbirn) to an approximate half-hourly cycle. Line 40 was broken in Schoppernau.

In addition, lines 35 and 40 have swapped their routes between Egg and Bersbuch and line 38 ends Monday to Friday instead of in Schwarzenberg in Bersbuch.

With the new construction of the Bezau cable car , line 34 was introduced, which connects the cable cars in Bezau and Mellau . Individual lines have also been omitted.

Around 4.5 million transport cases are counted every year, a large number of which are winter sports enthusiasts and summer tourists.

The route network comprises around 750 kilometers and 21 routes, most of which are served every hour.

Line network

There are separate timetables for the winter and summer months on lines 34 and 38; the sections of line 36 to Schönenbach and line 40a to Lech are only served in the summer months. Line 41 only runs between Hittisau and Sibratsgälle on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

The general operating time is between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., and each line must be viewed individually.

There are larger transfer points in Krumbach, Hittisau, Egg and Bezau.

In addition to the connections to the Landbus Unterland in Dornbirn, Bregenz (there also to the city buses ) and the Hofsteig communities, lines 24 and 45 run from Alberschwende via the hillside communities of Buch and Bildstein . In Warth and Lech there are connections to the upper Lechtal and to the Arlberg , from Damüls via the Faschinajoch to the Große Walsertal ( there is no bus service via the Furkajoch to the Laternsertal ). In Oberstaufen there are transitions to the Bavarian bus routes.

Furnishing

Line 40 towards Warth in Schoppernau (with a new color scheme)

In addition to the usual yellow color scheme for buses in all of Vorarlberg, the REGIO Bregenzerwald issued an additional provision in 2011 that stipulates that all public buses in operation must be equipped with passenger information systems. In addition to the next stops, these displays also inform the passenger about changes in the route (for example due to construction sites) and about police notices such as wanted alerts . As on the buses themselves, no advertising that is not directly or indirectly related to the VVV may be shown there. The systems have been installed in all buses since the beginning of 2012.

The drivers are also obliged to wear a service uniform . This consists of at least one shirt (usually blue or yellow; Postbus white). A tie or vest can also be worn.

The fleet consists mainly of vehicles from the Mercedes-Benz brand . But there are also occasional buses of the brands MAN , Neoplan , Setra , Solaris and Temsa .

In the long term, the high- floor buses used to date will be replaced by low-floor or low-entry buses to make boarding easier - especially for older people.

Registration deadlines reinforcement bus

Groups of ten or more must notify the VVV of their travel preference by the evening of the previous day. If necessary, the operator can then use a so-called "amplifier" (reinforcement bus), which makes sense for heavily frequented lines. These supplementary buses often run a different route than the regular bus services. The background to this is the high frequency of the route network, not only during rush hour, due to the free transport of tourists in the course of the Bregenzerwald Card distributed free of charge by the tourist offices.
