The inatura (officially inatura - Erlebnis Naturschau Dornbirn) is a natural history museum in the Austrian city of Dornbirn . It emerged in 2003 from the former Vorarlberg Nature Show and was set up on a former factory site in the new Dornbirn city garden.

It is one of the three state museums in Vorarlberg and is considered the largest and most modern nature museum in the Lake Constance area. The museum includes a documentation center on Vorarlberg's nature and a so-called interactive exhibition.

history

Rüsch-Werke letterhead from 1906

The museum goes back to Siegfried Fussenegger , who set up a private natural history museum ("Show of Vorarlberg's Natural History") in the old Fronfeste in Dornbirn and later in the former cattle market since 1934, which was taken over by the city of Dornbirn and the state of Vorarlberg in 1957 . Fussenegger became head of the collection now called "Vorarlberger Naturschau", the new building of which was opened in 1960.

The city of Dornbirn started planning and designing a new nature museum in 1997. The centrally located former foundry , machine and water turbine factory  - the Rüsch-Werke  - was selected as the location ; it was founded in 1827 by Josef Ignaz Rüsch and operated until 1984.

The renovation and expansion of the museum began in 2001 and the Inatura was inaugurated in June 2003. The exhibition area is around 3,000 m². An approximately 25,000 m² park, the Stadtgarten , was built around the museum (see also: Stadtgarten small hydropower plant with Zuppinger water wheel ).

Concept and focus

The exhibition concept is based on the typical mountain, forest and water habitats of Vorarlberg. The permanent exhibition "The Human Miracle" explains the processes in our body. Special features of the inatura are interactive zones to explain technical and physical phenomena.

A museum shop, a restaurant with an outdoor dining area, a science library as a lending library and a museum education department are connected to the museum.

further activities

Inatura is the documentation center for nature in Vorarlberg. It centrally collects scientific data and evidence with a national reference. All this information can be used to determine the distribution and endangerment of an animal or plant species.

Inatura is also responsible for the organization and implementation of exhibitions and other events on natural history topics throughout Vorarlberg.

The museum is also the publisher of various publications on nature and the environment in Vorarlberg, such as the series “Vorarlberger Naturschau, research and discover” on current research results with a regional reference or the “Red Lists” drawn up on behalf of the Vorarlberg state government.

Awards

Inatura received the Austrian Museum Prize in 2005. 2006 inatura was in Lisbon for the 29th "Museum of the Year Award", the "special recommendation" (Special Prize) awarded the second highest award from the European Museum Prize .
