history
In October 1991 the Dornbirn city bus was introduced as the first city bus system in Vorarlberg. The line network consisted of 3 lines and 58 stations.
At the end of 1992 an additional line was introduced from the center to the Karrenseilbahn.
In 1993 the first 15-minute cycles were introduced and additional buses were purchased.
In 1995 the operating hours were extended into the evening.
In 1996, line 9 was introduced to Kehlegg.
In 2002 the entire fleet was replaced and the central transfer point was relocated from Riedgasse to the train station.
The design of the buses, stops and the logo proved to be innovative and groundbreaking. The city bus system first served as a model for the city buses introduced later in Lemgo and Lindau . As a result, all local public transport in Vorarlberg was based on the design of the Dornbirn city bus. Finally, the system in Lemgo was a role model for many German cities. a. almost at the same time as the Bad Salzuflen city bus .
In 2004 there was a serious change in the route with the opening of the new bus terminal at the train station . Since then, the station has been served by all city bus lines with the exception of line 8. This results in improved transfer options to the trains of the ÖBB and the lines of the Landbus Unterland .
Originally, none of the buses was equipped with an electronic passenger information system. Since spring 2007, however, these have been retrofitted in most buses.
In 2009 the fleet was again converted to modern buses.
Also in 2010 the route of the Dornbirn city bus was changed at the same time as the timetable change by ÖBB.
For the 25th anniversary in 2016, with the timetable change in December, line 10 was introduced and the operating times on lines 2, 3 and 6 were extended on Sundays and public holidays. In addition, a second large junction was built on the Sägerbrücke next to the train station. For this purpose, a bus stop was built directly on the Sägerbrücke and the stops that were previously in the immediate vicinity of the Sägerbrücke were combined on the Sägerbrücke.
Currently (2020) the route network has a length of 54.5 km and 176 stops (with multiple counting of the stops served by several lines). New MAN Lions City buses have been ordered and all buses that are currently in operation will be exchanged or given to other lines (e.g. Landbus Unterland). The operator E + E Rhomberg is also leaving the Dornbirn city bus and will be using the Landbus Unterland in the future. Only the ÖBB-Postbus will run on the Dornbirn city bus.

Restructuring at the train station
On July 1st, the departure edges at the station were reallocated. This became necessary due to the ever closer intervals and the ever longer buses. The bus station was expanded by 5 new edges. The edges A, B and C enable a direct change from bus to train and are located directly in front of the Sutterlüty or the station building. In addition, a new edge was built directly in front of the post office building. There is also a new edge in front of the Chamber of Labor.
Edge D was set up for the bicycle parking facility. Travel and long-distance buses stop here.

Possible target network
In the next step, the Hatlerdorf- Südwest and the Wallenmahd and Dornbirn-Nord operating areas are to be better connected to the city bus network.
For the south-western Hatlerdorf , a bus line is to serve the Erlgrund - Lange Mähder - exhibition grounds . Line 2 would be an option here, which would then lead from the Wallenmahd parish hall via Hatlerdorf station to the exhibition center .
The Wallenmahd operating area could be connected via line 3. At Hatlerdorf station, this would cross under the railway line along Schweizerstrasse and then lead to Bleichestrasse on the toilet catcher. From there it could then be extended to the Wallenmahd operating area.
The connection of the operating area Dornbirn-Nord could be realized via a "branch" of lines 4 and 14. These two lines are already linked and would still be afterwards.
In order to better develop the residential area in the area of the sewage treatment plant, line 6 could be extended from its terminus Am Eisweiher to Torfweg.
Vehicle fleet
The uniform, red painted bus fleet originally consisted of Neoplan 4010 NF and two 4009 NF, which were replaced by Neoplan Centroliner 4411 NF from 2002. Since 2009 the buses have been exchanged for Solaris Urbino 10. There are currently 18 Solaris buses in operation and, since 2015, three Mercedes Citaro 2s have been running on lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 12, 14 towards the exhibition grounds, Wallenmahd, Am Stiglbach and Kastenlangen. Recently, 12 meter long buses are to replace the Solaris Urbino 10 and there are also two Mercedes-Benz Citaro C2 Gs in test operation on Line 1. A MAN Lions City has also been added for school courses. Sometimes vehicles of the Landbus Unterland also operate as city buses.
The fourth generation of the city bus fleet has been in operation since August 10, 2020. This became necessary because after 10 years, the Solaris Urbino 10 buses have reached their limits in terms of capacity and comfort. Therefore 19 new buses (the articulated buses are already available) with hybrid technology were purchased. Three of these buses are equipped with a turning assistant. The passenger capacity was increased by 50% from 1,358 seats to 2,018 seats.
3, 10.6m buses were purchased especially for the mountain roads.
The current vehicle types are:
number | Type | Capacity* | Application area (line) | length |
---|---|---|---|---|
2 | Mercedes Benz Citaro C2 G | 44/90 (134) | 1 | 18m |
13 | MAN Lion's City 12C | 30/62 (92) | 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,10,12,14 | 12m |
3 | Mercedes Benz Citaro C2 | 28/66 (94) | 2,3,4,12,14 | 12m |
3 | Mercedes Benz Citaro C2 K | 27/59 (86) | 2,3,4,5,7,9,12,14 | 10.6m |

Others
Dornbirn trade fair
At large trade fairs, the stops at Messekreuzung and Messepark are closed . The Landbus Unterland buses will then be diverted from Lustenauer Straße to the main entrance of the fair. The buses of the Dornbirn city bus run to the relocated Messequartier stop directly in front of the main entrance to the exhibition center.
Gymnaestrada 2019
The exhibition center was the main venue for the World Gymnaestra . Group presentations took place here in 8 halls. In addition, the participants were fed here and the FIG gala and the national evenings took place here. A total of 18,000 participants took part in the Gymnaestrada . This meant an enormous additional burden for the public transport system in Dornbirn and Vorarlberg . In order to cope with this, the offer has been enormously expanded. Express buses were used, which connected the exhibition grounds directly with the national villages of the World Gymnaestrada with few intermediate stops . In addition, more articulated buses were used. Schoren station served as the main transfer point between the S-Bahn and the bus. Line 1E was introduced for this purpose, which should serve as a reinforcement line for line 1. Line 1E ran every 5 minutes between Schoren station and the exhibition center . Line 10E was introduced to connect the city center with the exhibition center even better.
The main entrance to the exhibition grounds , on the side of the exhibition park , became a stop for all bus routes. Lines 50, 52 of the Landbus Unterland were also diverted from the exhibition intersection to the exhibition center .
The following express buses have been introduced:
