The Waldbad Enz is a public outdoor pool in the Austrian city of Dornbirn in the state of Vorarlberg . It is named after the district of Enz, which denotes part of the valley of the Dornbirner Ach .

history

As early as 1924, the socialist parliamentary group introduced the first plans to build a public bath for the city of Dornbirn in the city council. At that time, however, the socialists still failed with their request, the only bathing establishment in the community remained a private bath owned by a textile company. The original Waldbad Enz was only built in 1937/38 and was designed as a bathing facility for all parts of the Dornbirn population. Initially, the concrete bathing pools were still flowed through by the water of the Dornbirn Ach . In 1964 a quartz filter system and a water circulation system were installed for the first time . This significantly improved the quality of the bathing water, which also enabled a permanent supply of fresh water to the pools. It was not until 1975 that a heat pump system was installed to heat the water. The water temperature was thus kept at a constant 24 degrees Celsius. Nevertheless, the water quality and the generally dilapidated condition of the system were repeatedly criticized, especially the quality of the then overaged concrete pools, which showed a very high level of water loss, as a result of which the operating costs continued to rise.

For example, on March 7, 1986, the city of Dornbirn announced a planning competition for the general renovation of the forest pool. Six architecture firms took part in this competition. On May 6, 1986, the Bregenz architect Guntram Mätzler was finally commissioned to work out a detailed plan. On March 31, 1987, the city council decided on the basis of the existing submission plans to renovate the Enz forest pool for 54 million schillings (around 3.9 million euros). Construction of the new bathing facility began on May 20, 1987, and the Enz Forest Baths celebrated its reopening on June 24, 1988. Together with the Stadtbad Dornbirn and the Karrenseilbahn , the Waldbad Enz is now owned by the Dornbirner Sport- und Freizeitbetriebe GmbH , a company of the city of Dornbirn.

Between mid-May and mid-July 2007 about 21,300 bathers visited the forest pool. Due to the bad weather this year, however, this represented a decrease of around 10,000 visitors compared to the same period of the previous year.
