A springboard is a springboard for jumping off in order to achieve a greater height or width. Spring boards are mainly used by athletes in gymnastics and water jumping . In a figurative, literal sense, a springboard is also a good starting point for a mostly professional or artistic career.

water sports

When jumping in the water, diving boards reinforce the dynamic impulse when jumping and cause the jump height necessary for the jump. In the competition, jumping from the 1-meter board and the 3-meter board.

In the past, springboards were made of wood (mostly pine wood) with a non-slip surface (sisal mat, rubber). Springboards have been made from a GRP-reinforced wood core with a non-slip carborundum coating (white "HSP" boards) since 1965 .

Spring boards are between 3.0 and 4.8 meters long and attached to a diving tower . At the rear end the boards are rotatably mounted, in the middle they lie on an adjustable hard rubber roller so that the springy effect can be adapted to the needs and body weight of the jumper.

In competitions (according to the rules of the FINA ) only high-performance “Duraflex” boards have been used since 1970. Duraflex boards are highly flexible. They are made of tempered aluminum and have a characteristic blue-green coating. The boards are 16 feet (4.9 m) long and perforated to increase dynamics (reduce weight and drag). Duraflex boards also have a long service life and are therefore preferred for public swimming pools. These boards are usually replaced with new ones for competitions. In-house training facilities are often available for training top athletes.

Comparability in competition

In 1928, at a FINA meeting in Amsterdam , the German Swimming Association applied for the introduction of steel diving boards in all international competitions. The proposal was approved by the jumping committee. The FINA general assembly accepted the proposal. From 1930 onwards, only steel springboards should be allowed in all international competitions. In this way, the demand for a uniform springboard was taken into account - in the opinion of some experts, however, not that for the best springboard. The best wooden boards (American pitch pine boards ) were said to have greater elasticity . The German Julius Stern is considered to be the inventor of the steel springboard. Stern was the department head for jumping in the German Swimming Association and also involved in the stock corporation for the production of the corresponding normal boards.

Gymnastics

Stepping stone and box

The springboards in gymnastics serve to increase the jumping ability, in apparatus gymnastics especially in the disciplines jump , parallel bars , uneven bars and balance beam . The Reuther board , named after its inventor, the gymnast Richard Reuther , is widespread . The properties are prescribed in the area of the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique . They are there 1.20 m long and 70 cm wide. The spring effect is achieved by metal or wooden springs. The diving boards are padded with non-slip pads. Springboards are made of hardwood.
