Kehlegg is a mountain village in the municipality of the city of Dornbirn in Vorarlberg ( Austria ). With its own cemetery, kindergarten, elementary school and fire station , the village has retained its independence and at the same time benefits from the advantages of the connection with the city of Dornbirn, such as the integration into the city bus network .

geography

Kehlegg is located on the eastern edge of the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley and on the western foothills of the Bregenzerwald Mountains at an altitude of 794 meters above sea level. The partially preserved natural landscape is characterized by open areas, forest tongues, solitary trees (old, isolated fruit trees, maples and chestnuts) and woodlands. Agriculture is still shaping the settlement structure of the village today. Many single-family homes have also been added since the 1960s. The unspoilt village character on the outskirts of the city of Dornbirn has led to high property prices in some cases.

Origin of name

The name Kehlegg is pronounced in Vorarlberg as " Kälig " or " Kählegg ". Around 1354 Kehlegg was referred to as " Kenlegg " and around 1431 according to the Alt-Stifts-Kalendarium from 1570 as " Kenleg (g) ". " Khienlegg " is written in the early measurement land register from 1650 . The name is likely to come from Romansh - "Kennel" refers to an artificial watercourse. " Kenlegg " means "Quellenegg". The spring water was once led down to the farms through a wooden channel (“kennel”).

history

Kehlegg is first mentioned in a document in 1354. In 1630 or 1635 the village was struck by the Black Death and is said to have been almost depopulated. In 1732, 21 houses and barns were destroyed in a fire. Originally, the Kehlegg farmers mainly cultivated grain and flax , with the expansion of the roads, cattle breeding gained in importance. In order to make pastureland available, steep slopes were cleared in the lower part of the village. The use of water was also of economic importance; the former Bad Kehlegg am Steinebach is described in the bathing manual of 1830 as a sulfur spring with good drinking and bathing water. Mineral water was also bottled in Kehlegg, it was formerly known throughout the country.

In 1923 the first telephone was set up in Kehlegg in the Gasthof Krone. 22 members took part, with 96,000 crowns being payable per member for the connection. The first telephone was installed on October 14, 1923 (call number 171).

politics

Politically, Kehlegg belongs to the city of Dornbirn, whose mayor has been Andrea Kaufmann (ÖVP) since 2013 . Therefore, the Kehlegg mountain parcel is only an electoral district of Dornbirn and does not have its own mayor or mayor.

Attractions

Maria Schnee chapel in Kehlegg

Kehlegg is the starting point for various hikes and a popular destination for the Dornbirn townspeople. The village has a compact settlement core with numerous Rhine Valley farms, some of which are more than 200 years old. The mountain church Maria Schnee , built in 1973, is considered to be architecturally valuable because the building has a relationship with the surrounding mountains. The Madonna on display inside is likely to have been made around 1470 and is attributed to the Multscher workshop .
