The Roman Catholic branch church Maria Schnee (also: chapel Maria Schnee or shortly Chapel Kehlegg ) is in the district Kehlegg the town of Dornbirn in Dornbirn in Vorarlberg . It is consecrated to the Mother of God and is a branch church of the Oberdorf parish church to the Dornbirn dean's office in the Feldkirch diocese . The building from 1973 is a listed building .

location

The chapel ( 799  m above sea level ) is about 3 km as the crow flies from the city center of Dornbirn.

The church, built in 1973, is considered architecturally valuable because the building enters into a relationship with the surrounding mountains.

history

According to oral tradition, the first chapel in Kehlegg was built in 1431. Because of the conflagration of October 16, 1732, in which 21 houses and just as many stables in Kehlegg were destroyed within a few hours , a small bell was purchased in 1744 to call to prayer and to ring the bell.

A new chapel has existed since 1719. In 1768 Stations of the Cross are allowed and blessed for the chapel. Due to the necessary renovation of the chapel, on August 13th, 1836, the village community requested a new chapel and in 1837 construction began and was also completed. Since 1933, Holy Mass can be read all year round in Kehlegg.

On March 27, 1942, the chapel bells had to be delivered for war purposes. Two new bells were consecrated on January 8, 1950.

On November 29, 1970, the foundation stone for the new church was laid by Diocesan Bishop Bruno Wechner . A modern new building was created by architect Hans Burtscher . Consecration and entry into the new church took place on August 15, 1973.

Church building

It is a building with an approximately rectangular basic shape and south-west / north-east orientation in the middle of the village on a slight elevation. The church building is around 12 m high, 19 m wide and 24 m long and has a gable roof with copper roofing. In the gable triangle there are generous lattice windows , through which the church interior is given a special brightness and connection to the outside.

The free-standing, south-facing, tower-like, approximately 6 m high building in which the bells are located is significantly lower than the actual church building. On July 28, 1973 the bell was removed from the chapel to the new church.

Furnishing

The prayer room has a ceiling made of lacquered fir wood slats and exposed concrete walls following the gable roof . The chancel is not separated from the prayer room and has a people's altar, also made of exposed concrete. To the left behind the altar there is a simple crucifix on the wall , which is dated by the Federal Monuments Office to around 1430, and to the right a statue of the Madonna , from around 1470 ( see below ). The wooden benches are kept simple and made of dark varnished wood, they are grouped around the altar.

There are Stations of the Cross made of simply carved wooden panels on the walls.

The Madonna

The statue of Our Lady was originally on the edge of the forest around 5 m above the old path to Bad Kehlegg . In 1923 a new path was created and access to the statue was made difficult and the wayside shrine was therefore relocated in 1925. In 1955 the Madonna was renovated by restorer Andreas Amann from Schlins and then placed in the Kehlegg chapel. In 1976 a house was built on this site and the statue was placed in the new church.

The Madonna was probably made around 1470 and is attributed to the Multscher workshop . The Madonna is said to be made of hornbeam and probably comes from a side altar in the parish church of St. Martin . According to oral tradition, this statue from the city of Dornbirn was brought to safety here on the occasion of the Swedish Wars.
