Großdorf (partly also Grossdorf or Egg-Großdorf ) is a village in the market town of Egg in the Bregenzerwald , a region of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg .
location
The village is about 100 meters higher than the center of Egger, about one and a half kilometers as the crow flies east of it on a gentle hill. Großdorf's center is grouped with the parish church of St. Josef and the dominant former Landammannhaus on Landesstraße L29 , Großdorfer Straße, which subsequently leads from Egg to the northeastern neighboring municipality of Lingenau . The Großdorferstraße on the edge of the municipality and the village of Großdorf crosses the Großdorfer bridge over the valley of the Subersach shortly before its confluence with the Bregenzer Ach .
history
Großdorf belongs to the oldest part of the municipality of Egg and is characterized by old farmhouses as well as modern new buildings from the 2010s in the town center. The first Großdorf chapel is dated before 1687, which makes it one of the earliest recorded chapels in the Bregenz Forest. In 1716 this chapel was raised to parish curacy. From 1760 to 1762 today's new church in Großdorf was built according to plans by Kaspar Waldner and consecrated in 1770. In 1862 this was expanded to the west, in 1883 it was raised to an independent parish church, which it has remained to this day. The parish of Großdorf is largely independent of the parish of Egg.
In the so-called “forest peasant republic ”, that is, during the exercise of high and blood jurisdiction by the Bregenzerwald estates within the framework of the Innerbregenzerwald court from 1390 to the 18th century, the elected governor had his official seat in the governor's house in the center of Großdorfer. The court, the prison and the place of execution ("Galgenbühel") of the forest republic were initially in Egg and Großdorf (later in Bezau ), while the political center with the town hall was the Bezegg in the neighboring community of Andelsbuch .
Today Großdorf is a largely independent district of the market town of Egg with its own kindergarten, elementary school, parish and local fire department. 1117 inhabitants live in Großdorf (as of January 1, 2020). The road layout of the heavily trafficked state road L29, which leads directly through the narrow center of Großdorf and represents an important connection between the communities of Egg and Lingenau, has been causing problems for years.
