Wolfurt is a market town in the Bregenz district in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg with 8579 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).
geography
Wolfurt is located in the westernmost state of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the Bregenz district southeast of Lake Constance at an altitude of 434 meters. The market town is part of the Rhine Valley conurbation and lies between the cities of Bregenz and Dornbirn. 23.5% of the area is forested.
Community structure
Wolfurt is a typical street village and extends on both sides of the main street in the direction of Dornbirn. Wolfurt is noticeable for its high level of urban sprawl . With a few exceptions, the place consists of single-family houses. The urban sprawl means that Wolfurt has grown together with Schwarzach today, although the two town centers are around four kilometers apart. The situation is similar with the neighboring municipality of Lauterach to the west, which in turn is heavily sprawled.
There are no cadastral communities in Wolfurt.
Wolfurt is a stage on the Maximiliansweg , part of the European long-distance hiking trail E4 .
Neighboring communities
Wolfurt shares its municipality boundary with six other Vorarlberg municipalities. Five of these six are located in the Bregenz district, as is the market town, and one in the Dornbirn district . In a clockwise direction (starting in the north) these are the communities of Kennelbach , Buch , Bildstein and Schwarzach , the district capital Dornbirn and the market town of Lauterach .
history
In the year 15 BC The Romans conquered the Lake Constance region and subjugated the local Celts and Raetians . They soon built an important military and trade route that crossed the raging Bregenz Ach near Wolfurt at the foot of the Steussberg .
Around the year 500 the Alemanni built two courtyards in what is now the municipality, the "Kellnhof" and the "Hof zur Steig" (later Hofsteig ), both of which later expanded as market cooperatives and became independent courts. The name Wolfurt appears for the first time around 1226 as that of a rich and warlike knight dynasty that had a great influence in southern Germany and Switzerland. In addition to pious abbots and nuns, the Lords of Wolfurt also produced warriors. The brothers Konrad and Ulrich von Wolfurt led Hungarian mercenary armies to Italy. In 1349 they swung themselves to governors of Naples and Apulia and later settled in Hungary, where their families ruled over five counties for another 100 years and accumulated wealth.
The well-known Wolfurt chalice , which he donated to the Pfäfers monastery, comes from the knight Konrad . The original is now in the National Museum in Zurich ; the original of the deed of foundation is kept in the St. Gallen monastery archive. A copy of the chalice is on display in the municipality's town hall.
The family died out in the 15th century, and Wolfurt Castle came to the Leber family from Bregenz as an Austrian fief for 200 years .
The old Wolfurt castles Kuien and Veldegg have burned and disappeared, Kuien Castle is mainly attributed to the realm of legends. The Wolfurt castle but was rebuilt after each fire and is now with its massive walls as a symbol of Wolfurt, it is in the possession of the market town.
When the independent community of Wolfurt was founded in 1808, Wolfurt had 1,143 inhabitants, 183 houses and 266 cows.
As pioneers, the Swiss family of Zupping brought ideas, work, money and diversified industrialization to Rickenbach as early as 1900 . The Zuppingers operated a textile industry, a grain mill and the first and only cold store in Vorarlberg at the time, which is still in operation at the same location today. The Zuppingers obtained the ice they needed for the cold store from the 100 acres of the mill pond, which later served as a rest stop and home for rare bird species for decades. The Zuppingers built an important canal and today's Bahnhofstrasse through their two square kilometer property. In 1900 they had the "Villa Zuppinger" built in Art Nouveau style. This building, unique in Wolfurt and the entire region, with its gardens and remarkable trees, is still family-owned today.
After the Second World War, Wolfurt was part of the French zone of occupation in Austria from 1945 to 1955 . After 1950, the farming village quickly transformed into a residential area with hundreds of new single-family houses, and soon also into an industrial community with efficient businesses. In the years 1970 to 1982 the ÖBB built Austria's most modern freight yard in Wolfurt. Because of its supraregional importance, Wolfurt was raised to a market town on May 1, 1982 .
