Cartel of Christian associations in Wolfurt

The Wolfurt club house is an event hall in the market town of Wolfurt . The building has cultural and historical value: it was built in 1913 as a venue for events and gatherings for the Catholic-conservative forces in order not to lose the workers who emerged in the second half of the 19th century to social democratic forces.

The casino movement

Before industrialization, Vorarlberg was an overpopulated and catastrophically indebted country. When the textile industry gained in importance in the second half of the 19th century , many people from Wolfurt found work in the Kennelbach factories of the Schindler company. In 1901 there were 2070 inhabitants in Wolfurt, 239 of whom were Italian factory workers. The Catholic conservative forces feared an expansion of the social democratic labor movement . To counter this, they formed the casino movement, also known as the club house movement. When Reinhard Johler (1991, 3) the club houses are as bastions of political Catholicism called. Catholic workers' associations were founded in several Vorarlberg communities. Vorarlberg's first Catholic workers 'association was established in Dornbirn in 1893 , the second in Hohenems in 1896 and the Wolfurt Catholic workers' association in 1999. The purpose of the association is specified in the statutes; among other things, the religiosity and morality of the workers as well as cheerfulness and sociability should be promoted. In 1908 there were already 12 workers' associations with over 1000 members in Vorarlberg. The term “workers' association” is misleading, however; it meant people who campaigned for workers' concerns. The first committee of the Wolfurt workers' association was not made up of workers, but of village greats such as stickers and craftsmen. The consequences of the casino movement are still felt today. In comparison with other industrialized regions of Austria, Vorarlberg took a different path; While in other countries an important socialist labor movement was forming, in Vorarlberg the Catholic Conservatives won the absolute majority in Vorarlberg in 1870 and did not give it up in the years that followed. In Wolfurt, too, the Catholic Conservatives succeeded in pushing back social democratic and liberal forces with the help of the casino movement.

Construction of the club house

The Catholic workers' association in Wolfurt organized events in the “Rössle” and “Sternen” inns that no longer exist. Among other things, there were lectures on topics such as the cremation of the corpses, the Balkans and London . In 1909 the Wolfurt Gymnastics Association was founded as a section of the workers' association. The net proceeds of a show gymnastics in 1911 were dedicated to the construction of a club house. In 1913, the workers' association built the club house on the property purchased in 1910, but only part of the planned building could be built - the First World War prevented its completion. After the workers' association could not raise the funds for completion, the "Cartel of Christian Associations in Wolfurt" was founded in 1921. In addition to the Catholic workers' association, this included the citizen music, the Turnerbund and the Liederhain. With house collections, the organization of a folk festival and the free work of the cartel clubs, the club house was opened at Whitsun 1922.

Use of the club house

The Wolfurt club house was built with a ballroom (16 meters long and 11 meters wide), a stage, a gallery, a bar and various club rooms. After the NSDAP came to power in 1938 under Nazi Mayor Theodor Rohner, the Cartel of Christian Associations was dissolved, the Nazis confiscated the clubhouse and used it for propaganda events. In the small hall they set up the first kindergarten in Wolfurt. In the post-war period, the clubhouse was used for various events: Carnival balls for the local clubs, exhibitions, theater performances, lectures and various other events took place in the clubhouse. Until 1946 the hall was also a training facility and competition hall for the Wolfurt gymnastics club . After the community of Wolfurt had grown from 2,522 inhabitants in 1951 to 7,368 in 1991, the construction of a new event hall was planned. A demolition of the club house in favor of the new hall was also considered. Ultimately, however, the community managed to acquire a piece of land and build the new “Cubus” hall opposite the club house. The Cubus, which opened in 1998, can accommodate up to 800 people. It was realized by the Vorarlberg architects cukrowicz nachbaur and Lothar Huber. The club house, which was renovated in 2005, now belongs to the market town of Wolfurt and is used for various events. The hall and gallery can seat 223 people, while 153 people are seated and seated.
