Arno Geiger (born July 22, 1968 in Bregenz , Vorarlberg ) is an Austrian writer .

Life

Arno Geiger grew up in Wolfurt , Vorarlberg. He studied German Philology , Ancient History and Comparative Literature in Innsbruck and Vienna . In 1993 he wrote a diploma thesis on coping with foreigners in the German-language long-distance travel texts of the late Middle Ages . In 1994 Geiger received his first performance scholarship.

From 1986 to 2002 he worked as a video technician at the Bregenz Festival in the summer . Geiger took part in the Ingeborg Bachmann Competition in Klagenfurt in 1996 and 2004 . In 1997 he published his first novel Little School of Carousel Driving . In 2005 Arno Geiger received the German Book Prize for the novel Es geht uns gut . In The Old King in Exile , he dealt with his father 's Alzheimer's disease . In 2018 Geiger was awarded the Joseph Breitbach Prize . In his acceptance speech he named the leitmotif of his understanding of art and life: “Art does not save people from chaos, but from order. Art protects the individual from the one-dimensional view. People are not unique in a simple but in a complicated way. "

Arno Geiger has a sister who is a musician. Since 1993 he has lived as a freelance writer in Vienna and Wolfurt / Vorarlberg. He is married.
