The prize has existed since 1972. Until 2009 it was known as the Austrian Prize for Literature , and since 2010 it has been awarded under the name of the Austrian Art Prize for Literature .

In addition to the Austrian Art Prize for Literature , the Outstanding Artist Award for Literature has been awarded since 2010, replacing the Austrian Promotion Prize for Literature awarded from 1950 to 2009 . The sponsorship award was awarded from 1950 to 1988 in annually changing categories ( poetry , drama , novel , story , radio play ), including in 1967 to Thomas Bernhard . The division limitation was lifted in 1989, and in 2010 the award was given its current name.
