Sabine Gruber

Sabine Gruber (born August 6, 1963 in Meran ) is a German-speaking writer from South Tyrol who lives in Austria .

Life

On his father's side, Gruber comes from a family of bookbinders, printers and typesetters; she grew up in Lana near Meran, attended the Beda Weber humanistic high school in Meran and after graduating from high school (1982) studied German , history and political science in Innsbruck and Vienna . From 1988 to 1992 she was a lecturer at the University of Cà Foscari in Venice . She has been a freelance writer since 2000 and lives in Vienna.

Gruber writes prose , poetry and essays ; there are also radio plays and plays by her .

She has been publishing since the early eighties. Her debut novel "Aushäusige" was published in 1996 by Wieser-Verlag in Klagenfurt and in 1999 by dtv in Munich. With the novels "Die Zumutung" (2003) and "Über Nacht" (2007) published by the Munich-based CHBeck-Verlag, the German-language feature pages became aware of her. The novel "Über Nacht" was on the longlist of the German Book Prize in 2007 as well as on the ORF and SWR best lists several times.

In the historical novel "Stillbach oder Die Sehnsucht" (also published by CHBeck in 2011), for which Gruber received the Elias Canetti grant from the City of Vienna, the author worked on a piece of Austrian and Italian contemporary history using the example of three women's lives. The novel was adapted for the theater by Andreas Jungwirth and was premiered on February 21, 2015 at the Bolzano City Theater (in the main roles: Krista Posch, Gerti Drassl, Florentin Groll; director: Petra Luisa Meyer; stage: Stefan Brandtmayr); "Stillbach or Die Sehnsucht" has been translated into several languages ​​(including English and Italian).

With "Daldossi or Das Leben des Moment" (published by CHBeck in 2016), which is about an aging, traumatized war photographer, she was shortlisted for the Austrian Book Prize in 2016 and ranked first on the ORF best list three times in a row.

All of Gruber's novels have been published in paperback by dtv.

Gruber also writes poems ("Fang or Schweigen" 2002, "To the end is never built" 2014, "At home on the abyss and in heaven" 2018) and publishes essays and articles on various socio-political topics. B. on fascist architecture in Italy ("Mussolini's Retortenstädte", Neue Zürcher Zeitung, September 7, 2018), about the South Tyrolean Option 1939 ("Go or stay?", Der Standard, June 23, 2019) or about metalanguage ("Entpört you! ", Die Presse / Spectrum, January 4, 2020).

Together with Renate Mumelter , she also manages the literary estate of the South Tyrolean author Anita Pichler (1948–1997) and has published anthologies and books on Pichler's work with Mumelter .

Until his unexpected death on August 24, 2016, Gruber was the partner of Austrian painter, performance and media artist Karl-Heinz Ströhle for twenty years.
