The Leipzig Book Fair Prize is a literary prize that has been awarded since 2005 as part of the Leipzig Book Fair by the Leipziger Messe with the support of the City of Leipzig and the Free State of Saxony and in cooperation with the Berlin Literary Colloquium .

The award, presented for the first time on March 17, 2005, is the successor to the German Book Prize , which was awarded at the same point with the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels from 2002 to 2004. The award is given to new publications in the three categories “ Fiction ”, “ Non-fiction and essay writing ” and “ Translation ” and is endowed with 20,000 euros in each category (as of 2019). One German-language work is submitted and awarded; its authors and, if applicable, its translators are consequently indirectly praised.

Unlike the former German Book Prize, the award does not honor already successful books, but rather new publications from the last one-year period before the respective trade fair. The award ceremony takes place on the first day of the fair in the glass hall of the Leipzig exhibition center. The jury consists of seven literary critics and experts. After the book fair was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic , the winners were announced live on the radio in 2020.

In 2021, due to the pandemic, the prize will be awarded on May 28 in the Congress Hall at Leipzig Zoo . The nominations were announced on April 13th.

Look into the audience

A seven-member jury made up of literary critics, journalists and literary scholars decides on the winners each year. The jury chair changes every three years. In the past, the regular jury members have never been appointed for more than three years in a row. So far, the literary critic Kristina Maidt-Zinke (jury member 2008–2010, jury chair 2016–2018) has been appointed to the jury most frequently .
