Robin Detje

Robin Detje (* 1964 in Lübeck ) is a German author , translator and director . He lives in Berlin .

Life

After training as an actor and working in theater, Detje initially worked as a freelancer for Die Zeit , later as editor and head of the department for literature at Zeit and the Berliner Zeitung . Detje wrote u. a. for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Theater heute , Literaturen , Merian , the Stern , the taz , the Merkur etc. a. As a translator he has u. a. Plays by Mark Ravenhill and Neil LaBute translated into German, as the director staged three plays at the Theater Combinale in Lübeck, including Babette's festival based on Karen Blixen and roast goose based on Thomas Kapielski . In 2002 his book Castorf - Provokation aus Prinzip (Henschel Verlag, Berlin) appeared on the artistic director of the Berliner Volksbühne , Frank Castorf .

In a media-critical manner, he summarized his experience in journalism in the magazine project Distance , which failed due to funding. Since then he has worked as a translator, a. a. by Kiran Desai , Gary Shteyngart , Will Self , Shalom foreigner , Denis Johnson (with Bettina Abarbanell ), Joshua Cohen and William T. Vollmann .

In 2008 he founded the artist group bösediva with the Italian actress Elisa Duca in Berlin .

He won the 2014 Leipzig Book Fair prize in the “ Translation ” category for his translation of William T. Vollmann's novel Europe Central from English . For the year and a half of work on the extensive novel, Suhrkamp Verlag granted him a research assistant. In 2017 Detje was awarded the Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt Prize “for his literary translations from English” .
