Elke Schmitter (born January 25, 1961 in Krefeld ) is a German journalist and writer .

Life

After graduating from high school, Elke Schmitter studied philosophy at the University of Munich . In 1984 she completed her studies with a master's degree . Since then, Schmitter has been working as a journalist: from 1992 to 1994 she was editor-in-chief of the Berlin daily newspaper , then freelance work for the weekly newspaper Die Zeit and the Süddeutsche Zeitung . She has been part of the editorial team of the news magazine Der Spiegel since 2001 . On March 1, 2017, she took over the management of the cultural department. Since June 1, 2018, she has been the author of the cultural department again.

Elke Schmitter published a volume of essays on Heinrich Heine under the title Und grüß mich nicht unter den Linden (1998) , following the volume of poems Windschatten im Konjunktiv (1982 ). In 2000 a story of adultery appeared with Ms. Sartoris , which was translated into more than 20 languages ​​(according to WorldCat , the world's largest bibliographic database, into 11 languages), in 2002 a kind of Berlin society panorama with Slight Misconduct . While the narrative of the first novel is strongly based on the example of the great novelists of the 19th century such as Flaubert and Fontane , Slight Errors is in the tradition of the British social novel . In autumn 2009 a translation of her poems was published under the title The stones ask me about you in English and Gaelic translation. With Verena Auffermann , Gunhild Kübler and Ursula März , Schmitter also published passion , a “female literary history” in 99 portraits in autumn 2009 . With Gabriele von Arnim , Christiane Grefe , Susanne Mayer and Evelyn Roll, she published the essay volume What to do - Democracy does not go without saying in 2017 .

Elke Schmitter curated the forum: authors at the Munich Literature Festival in November 2016 under the motto “one word gives the other” .

In 2018 she was Visiting Author / Max Kade Professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville , Tennessee .
