Charly García was the eldest son of a wealthy family from Buenos Aires. At the end of the first reign of Juan Domingo Perón , the economic situation deteriorated dramatically and his father began teaching physics and mathematics . His mother worked as a producer of folk music programs for Argentine radio.

At the age of three, his parents discovered Charly García's musical talent and promoted it by enrolling him in the Thibaud Piazzini music school. At twelve, Charly García was ready to teach himself. At the age of thirteen he, who previously only knew classical music and folklore, heard a recording of the Beatles for the first time . He later said of this experience that it was like “listening to classical music from Mars ”.

At high school he met Nito Mestre . In 1969 the band "To walk spanish" by Charlie García merged with "The Century indignation" by Nito Mestre and formed the soon very successful formation Sui Generis . Sui Generis played folk rock with symphonic elements. The first record was released in 1972. On September 9, 1975, the group gave their farewell concert in front of 20,000 spectators in the Luna Park Stadium. This was the biggest rock concert ever to have taken place in Argentina.

In 1976 the musicians from Sui Generis got together again to record a record with the musicians León Gieco , Raúl Porchetto and María Rosa Yorio. This LP was entitled "Porsuigieco" (a mixture of Raúl PORchetto, SUI Generis and León GIECO).

In the months that followed, some important things changed in Charlie García's life. He separated from his partner María Rosa Yorio, with whom he had a son. With his new partner, the Brazilian Marisa Parendeiras, the horizon of his perception expanded. He tries his hand at symphonic rock with new musicians. The band "La máquina de hacer pájaros" recorded two albums, but they never really became popular in Argentina. Since the political message of the texts brought Charlie García into conflict with the dictatorship of the military under Jorge Rafael Videla , he decided to emigrate to São Paulo ( Brazil ) at the end of 1977 .

In São Paulo he came into contact with Brazilian musicians such as Milton Nascimento . In the following years a new group was formed around Charly García, which also included musicians from Sui Generis. They recorded their first album in São Paulo under the name Serú Girán . Serú Girán also performed in Argentina and Charly García was briefly imprisoned by the military in 1979.

After 1983 and the disempowerment of the military, Charly García returned to Argentina as a soloist. In the following years he became more radical and uncompromising. During the phase of democratic awakening he performed at numerous concerts. In the late 1980s, his music sounded like punk rock . The 1990s were initially characterized by excessive drug use. He played in a changing line-up, often in the clubs of Buenos Aires. During this time eight albums were created. He played with various Argentinian musicians. There was a new edition of Serú Girán with a concert in the River Plate Stadium . In 1997 he worked with Mercedes Sosa and recorded the album Alta Fidelidad . In February 1999 he played at the Buenos Aires Vivo III Festival in front of 250,000 listeners and a few months later at a private concert in the Casa Rosada in front of the then Argentine President Carlos Saúl Menem .

In 2004 he started a tour across Argentina. Under the motto La Venganza (Revenge ) he played in Ushuaia ( Tierra del Fuego ) at −2 ° C.
