Maximiliansweg
The Maximiliansweg is a long-distance hiking trail that leads in two variants with different degrees of difficulty of 359 and 388 km from Lindau (Lake Constance) along the Bavarian Alps to Berchtesgaden .
The Maximiliansweg usually runs the same route as one of the two variants of the European long-distance hiking trail E4 within the German area and connects at both ends to the Austrian Voralpenweg 04 . This 359 km long Joch route is the easier and more comfortable alternative to the summit tour of the E4. Many parts of the trail still require surefootedness and mountain experience.
Along the way you come across many tourist attractions such as the castles Neuschwanstein , Hohenschwangau and Linderhof .
history
The hiking trail was named after Maximilian II , King of Bavaria . In the summer of 1858 he undertook a five-week journey from Lindau on the northern edge of the Alps to Berchtesgaden. Most of the time he rode in carriages, but he covered a few parts on horseback and climbed some peaks.
In 1991 the German Alpine Association opened the Maximiliansweg as a pure footpath.
location
The Maximiliansweg essentially runs in Germany, but in the initial part you also enter Austrian territory. On its course you hike through the Bregenz Forest , the Allgäu Alps , the Ammergau Alps , the Bavarian Prealps , the Chiemgau Alps and the Berchtesgaden Alps . The larger towns and cities that the route crosses are Sonthofen , Füssen , Oberammergau , Eschenlohe , Walchensee , Lenggries , Bad Wiessee , Fischbachau , Brannenburg , Aschau im Chiemgau , Marquartstein , Ruhpolding , Inzell and Bad Reichenhall .
course
The paths are mostly alpine trails, only partially forest roads, rarely asphalt roads. The ship crosses at two points: across Lake Constance between Lindau and Bregenz and across Lake Tegernsee between Bad Wiessee and the city of Tegernsee . The path is not suitable for children because of the steep inclines and declines in some areas. In winter (late October to mid-May) the path is not accessible as there is mostly snow and many of the mountain huts that serve as bases are closed. Depending on the route, between 17,000 and 21,000 meters of altitude are overcome. The highest point of the Maximiliansweg is the high plateau in the Ammergau Alps with a height of 2082 m .
The Maximiliansweg is divided into 22 daily stages.
